Mitt Romney is tied with President Obama, according to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, but the people who plan to vote for him are motivated more by their opposition to the president than by their support for the Republican challenger.
The survey published Tuesday showed 47 percent of registered voters favor Obama and 47 percent prefer Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has closed a 3-point gap since the poll was conducted last, in May.

Granted, I am relying solely on my memory of elections from childhood to present, but it seems the American electorate has always been this way: reactionary. Even though LBJ wasn't running, Nixon won because he was 'not LBJ'. Even though Nixon had resigned, Ford was seen as a continuation, so Carter won by being 'not Nixon'. Reagan won by being 'not Carter'. GHW Bush was 'not the relic of Carter' or 'not Willie Horton' depending on your view of Dukakis. Clinton was 'not Reagan-Bush' and GW Bush was 'not Clinton-Gore'. For some, Obama was 'not Bush-McCain-Palin'. Now we have Mitt 'not Obama' Romney, while this time around the incumbent is trying to say at least he's 'not Romney=more GW Bush'. Kitch, what do you think, shall we ask the UK to please take us back? Where, oh where, is the next Mo (if nominated I will run to Mexico, if elected I will fight extradition) Udall?
Fact No. 1, as a candidate, Barack Obama promised to create five million new energy jobs alone. Just 5 million energy jobs. Fact No. 2, he claimed that, by the end of the first term, his healthcare plan, would quote, "bring down premiums by $2,500 for the typical family." Fact No. 3, he guaranteed that his financial rescue plan would help stop foreclosures. Fact No. 4, in the first year of his presidency, he pledged, quote, "to cut the deficit we inherited in the half by the end of my first term in office." Fact No. 5, he said he would, quote, "lift two million Americans from poverty" and, quote, "jolt our economy back to life." Obama won by blaming everything on Bush and, by association, McCain. Well the Dems controlled congress from 2007 to 2011. Obama had one party rule for two years and failed at nearly every promise. Health Insurance (not health care) reform went through by bribing nearly every legislator, using every parliamentary trick and depending on the laziness of congress not to read the bill. Well he's had nearly four years and he is still blaming a man who retired almost four years ago. Will he blame himself if he is re-elected and is ineffective for another four years?
That's no surprise. How could anyone actually LIKE Romney. He comes off more like a robot than a person. He's nobody I'd like to go to dinner with, or have a cup of coffee or beer with. So if you can't stomach Obama, you hold your nose and go with Romney. That's the two-party system, folks.
When viewing such a detailed recitation of facts, the source is important for understanding the context. If you believe Bernard Goldberg, I'm selling a bridge in Brooklyn--cheap. This is largely nonsense, but many will read it and--lemming-like--believe it and vote against their own interests.
If your concern is "ugly and mean-spirited campaign rhetoric," Romney has already established a very solid precedent in the 2011-12 GOP primary race. Just ask the opponents he destroyed with his vicious and often misleading ads. The onslaught was unstoppable. Did you really expect the Obama campaign to allow the same to happen in the general election? Romney's unprincipled record is ripe for destruction--as it should be. He has no core beliefs and has been on both sides of many major issues of our time. That is what is being exposed. He's a fraud, which is likely why he appeals to you.
Who cares about the reasons, as long as enough sane folks vote for Romney, we can prematurely retire the most divisive, least competent president we've ever had. How on earth did I trick myself into voting for this mirage last time...
Romney is The Great Impostor! He pretended to be a cop when he was in college. He pretended to be a moderate when he ran for governor. He pretended to be a conservative when he ran for president. Who the heck is he???
