WASHINGTON -- Senator Scott Brown made a new push on Tuesday to win passage for legislation that would make it illegal for people to misrepresent themselves as military heroes, two weeks after the Supreme Court struck down a similar law, enacted in 2005, that it said violated free speech protections.
Brown, a Bay State Republican and a member of the Army National Guard, predicted that his legislation, “the Stolen Valor Act of 2011,” would pass muster because it would focus on people who profit from their misrepresentations.

Sorry, Brown, but this strikes me as really stupid. There are so very many really critical problems and so much essential legislation that should [be getting] [almost said "warrant", but I don't want to sully Eliz Warren's name by associating it with this kind of nonsense] your attention. If this is what you think is important enough to spend your time on, then you're not what I'd want as a senator.
I agree with WomanOfBoston. How many people fraudulently pass themselves off as military heroes every year? 1? 2? It regrettable, but there are so many more important things for Congress to deal with.

Lets see - not controversial, helps no one, ne negative consequences...yup...the perfect Senator Sidelines issue!
The Stolen Valor act may seem to trivial to those who have never experienced the horror of combat but it is taken very seriously by veterans.
The Stolen Valor act is the stupidest act ever concieved by congress and the SCOTUS got it exactly right when they struck it down. If congress can make it illegal to lie about whether you were in the military then they can make it illegal to lie about pretty much anything.
This is an absolutely ridiculous concept. No one's valor is being stolen. If you earned a medal properly it still stands. However there are always people who embellish their records and, frankly, shame on them. This is a poor choice of behavior on their part because it is something easily checked. There is no need to waste police and court time with people who are so anti-social. In Massachusetts we have had candidates in the past who feigned an exemplary military record and when found out they received the greatest punishment of all, loss of a career and scorn from the public. Some humans lie and there is no law that will stop it. Unless it is in a court room under oath about some crime does it make sense to spend public money. A special category for social lying wastes government resources. I thought the Senator wanted to cut government spending. If his intention is to distract the public from explaining why he votes lockstep with Republican Senate leadership he may be having some success there. Some veterans will naturally sympathize with such a law, but forget votes against producing jobs, health care, or decent foreign policy on their behalf. Soldiers past and present deserve these opportunities more from their government than ferreting out for punishment the equivalent of some fisherman's tales of their conquests. We will see if Senator Brown can continue such fluff when he debates Prof Warren in the Fall on more substantive issues.
I agree that something must be done to prevent Stolen Valor. However, the Supreme Court has spoken and there is no way to punish offenders. This is another sound bite from Scott Brown which will go nowhere and he knows it. It is sad that he uses these tragedy's to promote himself when he knows he is doing nothing. He has voted repeatedly against veterans benefits. That is the real stolen valor, cheating veterans of what they not only deserve but what they need and that is Scott Brown and his party 100%
While we are into frivolous pursuits and wasting time, let's outlaw pandering...it is far more insidious and even more dangerous to all of us than claiming a medal not earned. (yes, Vietnam era USMC vet. but no hero by any objective measure.)
Isn't this what Brown does?
I say we outlaw stupid ideas and political posturing! Brownie sure loves to cuddle-up with the tough guys. He'd vote for anything that he thought would put him in the same sentence with soldiers, fishermen and other traditional blue collar types. Pretty easy to see through this.
Let's see profiting from their misrepresentations sounds like people who want to state that their importance is actually greater than what they really have accomplished. Does speaking too Kings and Queens when you really haven't qualify? Scott is great at pandering 101..
Maybe you should say most veterans you know and have asked. The veterans I know, including myself, couldn't give a crock. Quit trying to represent whole classes of people with fairy tales. I should add that the majority of veterans served honorably but never experienced "horror of combat."
Can Scott Brown please learn to PRIORITIZE. Please focus on passing meaningful legislation, not ra-ra rally around the flag posturing. Its sickening
As a veteran of WW II, I'd say, Mr. Brown, pay more attention to the people and their needs than to liars. This is meaningless crap.
Pander-monium! How about focusing on people who profit from their misrepresentations in the banking industry?
What a waste of time and my tax dollars! With so many types of fraud that go unpunished, he's going to focus on this tiny facet?
@System: Sen. Kerry's record of action for servicemen, veterans and their survivors is light years beyond what Brown even thinks about! It's easy to write junk about anyone. It is more difficult to provide links supporting that junk. Here is Kerry's action legislation. Note the year! http://ohpblog.ohpinion.com/?m=20050413 ...And here is Brown's commitment to his Guard service. I hope you can appreciate Brown's diligence and attentiveness! http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/01/07/guard_service_a_key_to_candidate_brown/ Scott Brown! What a sorry excuse for a US Senator!
samill2 As a vertan and retired USArm officer I couldn't agree with you more. He never should have been promoted beyond MAJ as he was turned down twice because he failed to meet the educational qualifications.
While we're at it, let's fine people for copying someone else's words adn passing them off as their own. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2011_10/scott_browns_plagiarism_flap_g032835.php
