Mitt Romney this week made what seemed to be an audacious statement: that some economies — particularly Israel, the United States, and Chile — are more vibrant than their neighbors because of the cultures within those countries. The comment triggered a firestorm, with Palestinians leaders calling them racist and his campaign trying to backtrack by saying the comments were taken out of context. But then, Romney doubled down on the argument by saying a country’s culture is precisely what matters.
