Researchers fear wallop of mandated budget cuts
Mass. would be hit hard; labs are urged to lobby
Looming budget cuts threaten federal funding for thousands of government grants used to finance medical research, and researchers are being urged to put down their microscopes and pick up megaphones to spread the word across Capitol Hill about the importance of the work being conducted in laboratories and the need to keep the budget ax from harming federal research programs. At stake is about about $2.5 billion in funding for the National Institutes of Health, which funds 4,930 grants for Massachusetts researchers.
