Words warm, combative as GOP nominates Romney

Speakers put a focus on state of the country

TAMPA — Mitt Romney arrived here from Massachusetts on Tuesday and was formally nominated the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, kicking off the GOP convention even as it competed with Hurricane Isaac for the nation’s attention.

Ann Romney — the nominee’s wife and most important political adviser — electrified the crowd with a 20-minute speech that mixed feisty rhetoric about the state of the country with a far softer image of her husband, who has struggled throughout his political career to connect emotionally with voters.

I caught some highlights of the speech and I can see Christie's hypocrisy here, granted he seems to be speaking more for himself, but when you claim to have the strength to say No why can't the GOP say No to its own beholden interests? Giving in to its own special interest groups rather than saying No is not being strong, its hypocritical. His comment about the government being in the way of your doctor is a spectre as well, since my medical insurance company and its care managers are already there, and I have to worry at times what my insurance will cover when I have to go in for care. Some of Ann's speech was awesome, and its great to hear from the women behind the men, but its all for show. The women are brought out for the cameras but then are put back behind the curtain after the spotlight shifts focus, and while her comment about her being an American is nice to know its just a slam for the Tea Party and Birthers to me. Sorry, but I had high hopes for the convention to speak truth, sadly I see none of it.

Were you actually watching the Republican Convention????? The Republican women speakers are accomplished, intelligent,  political women. The women belong to the Republican party; They were not 'for show' but they are duly elected in their respective states to various political offices. They are highly respected political players; They are articulate, talented and by no stretch of the imagination, can anyone who knows the political landscape claim the Republican women Speakers were brought out for the cameras. Very dumb comments to make about the accomplished Republican women holding public office!

When Republicans say "We are taking our country back", why do they always leave out the rest of the sentence: "to the eighteenth century"?

WRONG: The Republican quote is based on the statistical truth that the U.S.A. economy has actually regressed in the past four years with Obama as President. The fact is, this has been Obama's first job and he has failed badly. But - oooops, you probably voted for him.

Ann Romney, what a great woman. Her speech last night was brilliant, and showed clearly the real story, not the media fairy tale about how the Romney family is out of touch, and couldn't possibly relate to the average American because of their great wealth. That's baloney! The Romney's are an involved and caring family. Best of all Mitt is running not because he seeks wealth or power, he already has those. He is running so he can use his proven skills to repair the damages done to our country by weak leadership and poor decision making.

The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule. - H. L. Mencken

Dehumanist ..... fantastic comment!! You are so very right when you talk about insurance companies and their care managers! They are the true rationers of health care. Ann may be Romney's greatest asset but the rest of us are treated like second hand citizens by the Republicans.

I don't know how Ann did it, scraping by in the early years before Mitt made their millions. How did Ann and Mitt get by when she was just the mayor's daughter and Mitt was an auto executive's son? Sure, they had their exclusive prep school educations and Mitt's dad was paying for his Harvard MBA and JD. But, Ann couldn't even afford a dressage horse then. And it was so believable when Ann claimed Mitt is so giving to others. I feel for Mitt because he had to get a Vietnam era deferment so he could be a Morman missionary in Paris. And I'm sure Ann and Mitt were very giving as they accumulated their $250 million fortune through elaborate tax dodges, raided pensions of others and the taking of thousands of good paying jobs during company takeovers engineered by Mitt at Bain.

Sarcasm has never been attractive, and even more ugly when couched in terms of jealous and twisted resentment.

...and back from whom?

Never a positive word about their goals or objectives, just ugly and nasty attacks. ---------- I saw plenty of this from Dick Cheney when he was VP, if you disagreed with him and his positions you were a terrorist or not a Patriot. This happens from both sides, it's called politics. Either learn to read between the lines or be a victim to it.

Great Republican Convention with lots of positive energy . . . however, Gwen Ifill of PBS has a huge problem with ability to focus on the content of the message from the Republican speakers: she is like a broken record and has asked repeatedly for someone to tell her what is the Republican message!!!! GO FIGURE_ PBS has a huge problem with journalistic integrity when they have an employee like Gwen Ifill who is obviously an OBAMA worshiper and unable to perform her job without bias. If the PBS wants to be like other television stations who wear their political colors on their sleeve - than they don't deserve public funding! Plain & simple. Judy Woodruff and Jeff Brown are able to do their job with neutral and intelligent comments, but Ms.Ifill is too concerned with how she can retort with derogatory comments about each, and every Republican. ENOUGH already - give her a back office._______________NEW PARAGRAPH_____Can anyone tell me what was Obama's foreign policy experience in 2008????? Senator Hillary Clinton has been doing his job for the past four years_____Obama tried to ride the coat-tails of Bush and reap the benefits of the Osama Bin Laden's death. THAT is the extent of his claim to fame with his so-called foreign experience!
