Day one of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte will feature speeches by Michelle Obama, Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, and Mayor Julián Castro of San Antonio.
Other speakers include Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago; Governor Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, an independent; and former president Jimmy Carter .
Delegates also will vote on the party’s platform, which includes a plank calling for legal same-sex marriage.
Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, said Michelle Obama will describe the president in personal terms, “as a husband, father, and a leader over the last four years.”
