Brown, Warren focus on veterans affairs

Race watched closely as it heads into the final stretch

MELROSE — US Senator Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren both brought decorated military veterans to campaign with them in Massachusetts on Saturday, putting the focus on veterans’ issues as the Senate campaign heads into its final stretch.

Brown, a Republican, campaigned with Arizona Senator John McCain, stopping at the Corrib Pub in West Roxbury after a rally at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall here. Warren stumped with Max Cleland, a former Georgia senator and a decorated Vietnam veteran.

Comments

I wonder if McCain knows Brown never served a day in Iraq or Afghanistan. (But certainly doesn't mind trying to leave that impression)

Democrats support the troops by cutting and gutting their weapons and equipment programs five years before they will be needed!  Surely you remember having no up-armored humvees for our troops in Iraq and no stealthy helicopters for the SEALS: those were cut by Clinton along with the rest of the military Clinton gutted to pay for his social fantasies.  Democrats 'support the troops' is an obscene lie.  Always has been.

If we had stayed out of Iraq, as we should have, we and they would be much better off today.

Does Brown consider claiming that he 'served in Afghanistan' (Brown-Warren debate #3), when, in fact, he failed to check the box to ACTUALLY serve with this fellow reservists, a form of "stolen valor" I do. Wonder what penalties he has in his proposed "stolen valor" bill for this kind of misrepresentation?

Instead of talking about the fantasy of Obama's "feckless" foreign policy (which has, in fact, gotten us out of one war, is getting us out of another, and didn't get us into any), why doesn't McCain talk about the facts of his chosen one for President: the Romney family's consistent avoidance of military service: His father avoided militry service against Hitler, Mitt avoided it in Vietnam, and his five sons avoided it in Iraq and Afganistan. There is a name for people who are ready to start wars that neither they nor their children will fight: Chickenhawk.

right on Bob....romney is my generational coward who demonstrated for the draft and the war....and then hi-tailed off to France while many of us went nam. The boy senator.a has been playing the system though to avoid serving in a combat zone. There is something "cheesey" about this guy....he should not be representing us in DC...

What's up with Michael Levenson's attack on John Tierney and what happened to "fairness" in reporting.  Look at this difference:

Hundreds cheered as McCain, Brown, and congressional candidate Richard Tisei entered the hall, packed with supporters, including a large contingent of veterans.

But then with regard to Tierney, the crowd was not "supporters" but "mostly diehard Democrats"

Tierney, who spoke at the Beverly rally before Warren and Cleland entered the room, got a standing ovation from the crowd, composed mostly of diehard Democrats.

Then, look at the coverage he gives to Tisei's comments versus the comments of John Tierney:

In Melrose, Tisei, a state senator from Wakefield before he ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2010, called the upcoming election one that will “determine the future of our country.”

He and the man he is trying to unseat, District 6 Representative John Tierney, are opposites on most issues, Tisei said.

“We have a congressman who has a totally different opinion than everybody who is here in the room,” Tisei said. “He thinks that higher taxes are good for our country. He’s one of those guys who thinks Washington knows best. He’s going to tell you what’s best for you to do. “

“Don’t you think it’s time we elected someone who is open and honest with people?” said Tisei, a veiled reference to the gambling controversy that has engulfed the campaign. Tierney’s wife, Patrice, pleaded guilty to helping file false fax returns for her brother Robert Eremian, a fugitive from justice. Tierney has denied knowing about the illegal nature of Eremian’s business.

And this is what he reported on John:

He [John] accused the Republicans of launching personal attacks instead of focusing on the issues.

***“Don’t you think it’s time we elected someone who is open and honest with people?” *** Damn right, Tisei...that's why we're not going to let Romney anywhere near the White House.

I am a Vietnam veteran who recognizes a fraud when I see one....and the buoy senator is one. McCain should be ashamed of himself for implying that brown served in Afghanistan when he was on a short mission...more than likely for political purposes. The boy senator probably had many chances to serve in hostile zones during his time in the NG. I believe he mentioned family duties kept him home....but a lot of individuals had growing families....but still went to serve in dangerous places.

I believe that Elizabeth Warren can appreciate what happens to veterans coming home from war. I believe that what her brothers told her about their experience far outweighs a light weight make believe colonel that is playing off his domestic military experience for the real thing. Do the right thing for Elizabeth warren and vote for and not the fluff that the boy senator carries around.

"I am a Vietnam veteran who recognizes a fraud when I see one....and the buoy senator is one." Dear Vietnam veteran: if you spent a little bit more time checking out Colonel Scott Brown’s National Guard background you would find out that he never said he did a tour of duty in Afghanistan. As a reservist he was required to attend many training exercises before he went to Afghanistan for his AT (active duty for training). He is a JAG and he never claimed to be in combat situation, specifically like an 11 Bravo. Scott Brown started out in the Guard as a Private and advanced to his present rank of Colonel because of his attention to detail and professionalism he exhibited to his fellow Guardsmen. If you are in fact a “Vietnam –Era -Vet” you would know that all it takes is one day to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in a war zone (all of Afghanistan is a war zone) and you can be killed in a wide variety ways. Suicide bombers, IED’s, VIEDS, mortar attacks in the most heinous way by Afghan soldier you think is an ally and in fact he is an enemy. You don’t need a time qualifications to get killed in a war zone. One day is enough to qualify. Scott Brown did an AT in Afghanistan. To refer to Scott Brown as a “Buoy soldier” or “Boy soldier” reflects your inability to comprehend or remember the danger that exists when you are doing any type of duty in a war zone. Senator McCain spent time in combat and as a POW. He was a warrior and leader of men who I am sure from his many years of military experience could quickly ascertain the true character of an officer better than Elizabeth Warren sitting around the kitchen table with her brothers.
