George McGovern’s indelible mark on Massachusetts politics

“Don’t Blame Me, I’m From Massachusetts.”

Tucked away in old barns and auto graveyards are reminders of what the 1973-74 Watergate scandal felt like here in Massachusetts, where voters chose Democratic candidate George McGovern over Republican Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential campaign: vindication, spelled out on now-fading bumper stickers.

System,

Give the dead, Republican or Democrat, a day of rest before you trash them.

I will say only this: I voted for Nixon in 1968 and I voted for Nixon in 1972. In the light of history, taking into account everything I now know about Nixon, Kissinger and Watergate, and taking into account everything I now know about McGovern and the people behind him, I would vote the same way today, only with even more conviction.

While you might disagree, I believe history has already rendered its judgement as to who was the better man.

Whether you would have voted for him or not, he was a patriotic American who served this country in war and peace. He flew B24's over Germany and received a Distinguished Flying Cross. What have you done.

You didn't have to say anything, but instead you decided to denigrate the man. That says very little about McGovern, but a lot about you.

I voted for Nixon once when he said about having a "secret plan" to end the Vietnam War. He didn't. By 1972 I had learned my lesson and seen the beginnings of unethical and criminal activity in Nixon's re-election campaign. George McGovern got my enthusiastic vote -- even though I lived in Cobb County GA at the time and only 1 in 7 voted with me. I have been proud of that vote all the years since.

George McGovern's life was about serving his country and its people. He was a great man!

North Viet Nam came running back to the negotiations when Nixon launched Operation Linebacker II (not to be confused with Operation Linebacker).  Simple historical fact.     'Nough said.
