President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney on Tuesday to win reelection to the White House, echoing his historic victory of four years ago and concluding a campaign in which he vowed to deliver on promises of a more vibrant economy.
Obama, who needed 270 electoral votes to be elected, was declared the winner by television networks around 11:15 p.m. At McCormick Place in Chicago, the site of Obama’s rally, the crowd erupted in cheers and supporters jumped up and down, waving placards with the campaign slogan “Forward.” The Associated Press called the race for Obama at 11:35 p.m.

As a child of the 50s and 60s, I was proud of the country when we elected a black president. At the end of a very tough first term, and running against a man one could call milk white, I wondered if the first black president would be a one-and-done elected official. How long would it be until we elected another black, or other "minority" president? Was the first election a fluke?? I'm proud of this country today, and I'm proud that the racial strife that made up a lot of the culture of the 50s-60s US is gone. I'm proud that the mindset of leaders like George Wallace is well behind us, and a stake driven through the heart of its cruel soul. Maybe we can help our second term president make the US a better place by being better citizens ourselves.

The System continues to whine.
The bald-faced lies that Romney and the Republicans told repeatedly to try to hoodwink the American people into electing them should have disqualified them out of hand. Fortunately, the voters handed them the resounding defeat they so richly deserved. Maybe next time they'll remember that honesty is the best policy.
