CIA chief Petraeus resigns over affair uncovered by FBI

WASHINGTON — CIA director and retired Army General David H. Petraeus, the accomplished battlefield commander credited with turning around American fortunes in Iraq before retooling the military strategy in Afghanistan, resigned in disgrace on Friday after admitting to an extramarital affair that some specialists suggested could have compromised national security.

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Petraeus wrote in a resignation letter to CIA employees Friday. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

time to at least do away with the LOLs! very boring and outdated!

This episode raises two basic questions:  what came about in Petraeus' personal life that so weakened him so he got involved with a woman not his wife?   What is there attractive about this inconclusive but ambitious bimbo whose self-seeking seems to have no boundaries including the destruction of men she gets involved with?  Will her radiologist husband stand by her and let himself be destroyed? And what about her two kids?  There is something decidedly aromatic about this case, and dead pogies might describe it.

An attractive woman, that also went to West Point and was writing a flattering book about him ?

Not an excuse, just an explanation.

So ... Petraeus resigns in disgrace, right AFTER the election (despite this investigation happening months ago) but right BEFORE his testimony on Benghazi. Very convenient for Obama.  Also for Hillary, doesn't look like Patraeus will be running in 2016.  I couldn't help but imagine all the confused Globe readers this morning ... "Benghazi, oh isn't that where they showed that terrible youtube movie?  They caught the nasty man that made that right?"

SystemWorked - believe it or not, I might actually have a bit of sympathy for Warren this morning,  and understand why she might have been 'off her game' at her press conference the other day.  Holly Petraeus is an executive at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ( appointed by and friend of Warren )  and I'm hearing that Paula Broadwell is an aide to Warren.

Since when does an extramarital affair by a high ranking member of any government or elected official suggest a compromise of national security in this country? I thought that all changed in 1992.

Ha, yeah ... folks on both sides can be very self-serving with this stuff.  Clinton had an affair with a 19 year old intern ( or JFK with much younger) and you'd be yelled at "you prude, it's just sex!".  But Scott Brown poses shirtless in Cosmo to earn money to squander on a college education and it's an OUTRAGE!

In this particular scenario though, Broadwell was researching a book, digging for info and is under investigation for snooping in Petraeus'  email account.  The question is if it is a matter of national security, why did they wait until right AFTER the election to force him out?

Nobody in the "greatest generation" minded when Eisenhower had his wartime affair with Kay Somersby.  Ah, but those were different times, huh?  Remember, as no less than the estimable rat Henry Kissinger put it so succinctly, "Power is the greatest aphrodisiac."  (I guess Jill St. John would agree.)  However all this Petraeus stuff is spun, with consopriacy theories already maturing just one day later, it's a real bummer; he was a good, talented man, but temptation gon' creep up and grab ya!

"According to the New York Times, government officials said the FBI had investigated whether a computer used by Petraeus had been compromised. In the course of that inquiry, federal investigators discovered the relationship, officials said."

Why would the FBI check  his computer for whether it is compromised or not without the General's permission? This is a cover-up excuse for the FBI to violate his constituional right against "unreasonable search."

New CIA Chief?  Two words: Richard Clarke.
