WASHINGTON — Embattled UN Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name on Thursday from consideration to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, bolstering the chances President Obama will name US Senator John Kerry to the nation’s top diplomatic post.
Rice, who had widely been considered Obama’s top choice, came under unrelenting fire from Republican senators over her public statements about the Sept. 11 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. She was accused of trying to hide the role of Islamic terrorists, a charge both she and top administration officials vociferously deny.

Sometimes making a mess of your responsibilities, especially big things that hurt real people, as Rice did for years in her various failed initiatives in Africa, actually comes back to haunt one. Even if you're a liberal, and the mainstream media cant' find anything bad (or thoughtful) to say about you.
Susan's chickens have come home to roost.
But not to worry, I am sure she will find a sinecure over at the Kennedy school, where her failures will be overlooked, due to her special qualifications (nothing like double count for the EEOC reporting).
Oh, so what you're saying is it has NOTHING to do with Bengazi and is just a way to zap the person? Well, if that's true then the Republiicans are liars.
jkupie,
No, I'm pointing out that the Benghazi flap is just the tip of the iceberg as to why Rice has proven herself not qualified for the job.
Funny, I bet most of you saying "hey she's qualified..." dont know a thing about her career, all you know is that some Repulicants oppose her, and like Pavlov's dogs, you get to salivating...
You for example, cant even spell Benghazi...
Too bad. I don't know anything about Susan Rice, but the thinking that she is disqualified because of what she said initialliy about Bengazi is simply preposterous. It's trivial accusations from little minds. And, if it were me, I would stick in there, run, and ram it down the throats of those small, mean individuals. And, if I were Obama I would find some way to demonstrate my displeasure == in a way that couldn't be missed -- to those responsible.
"Too bad. I don't know anything about Susan Rice,...".
So who are you to comment about the controversy regarding her qualification? That you admit you don't know anything is no reason not to question those of us who do?
And why don't you know anything about a controversial subject like this, spend too much time on FaceBook?
"So who are you to comment about the controversy regarding her qualification? That you admit you don't know anything is no reason not to question those of us who do?"
I didn't "admit I didn't know anything". I said I didn't know anything about Susan Rice except that to pile on her based on what she said about what happend in Benghazi is nuts.
You, on the other hand, know less than nothing -- because what you claim to know is not true and is stupid, and you mind to closed to other than what is stupid.
Meanwhile Andrea Mitchell on NBC made the claim (proof not required for NBC, of course) that the ONLY reason Rice was attacked by GOP critics was that she was Black and a Female. Strange that Andrea forgot that George Bush nominated both Condaleeza Rice and Colin Powell for Secretary of State. And the article (and Andrea Mitchell) forgot to mention that Susan Rice also failed to heed the US Kenyan embassy's calls for help in 1998 just before the embassy was hit with a truck bombs that killed 200 people.
Actually, I think she was attacked to pave the way for Kerry, which would then open up the possibility for a Republican from Massachusetts again. I don't think it started that way (I don't think McCain and Graham are that smart or devious), but I think that's why they haven't let it go.
So wait. Bush still controls the GOP? Wow!!!
Sadly, with the removal of the utterly qualified Susan Rice's name for the possible Secretary of State position, John Kerry it seems is all but assured the nomination for this position. This means, of course, that Governor Deval Patrick will appoint someone in the interim and 150 days from that point an election will be held. Obviously, Scott Brown has his eyes set on returning to the Senate seat Elizabeth Warren trounced him to get.
Word is Ed Markey will run for that seat against yet again Scott Brown. Just when we thought the Brown albatross was removed from our collective Massachusetts necks, here it is again. This is just a warning that we MUST defend that seat for the Democrat. I cannot think of a better candidate who has served the longest in the House and who would be more qualified for that seat than Ed Markey.
Yet again, we will be in a position to work our respective posteriors off to MAKE SURE the inept, unqualified, intellectually inferior Scott Brown NEVER see the inside of a Massachusetts national Senate office again. If it is Ed Markey (and I hope that it is) then we should give him our absolute and unequivocal support treating him the same as we did Elizabeth Warren. I aver Republicans should never be allowed to see the inside of Congress in any capacity again!
Here's another "Coincidence". Susan Rice's announcement comes just before the State Dept's report to Congress about what happened in Benghazi is due for release. Also Congress now has discovered that the Administration has been HIDING 20 survivors of the Benghazi attack, and refusing to allow Congress to interview them.
Miker6, YOU LIE! That is patently UNTRUE. Where did you get that Fox NO NEWS NEWS?
Fabrications are SO MUCH more impressive WITH random capitalization.
If Kerry is appointed, my advice to the Governor woulld be to make a daring move by appointing Rep. Steven Walsh of Lynn to the seat. Steve Walsh is a brilliant young legislator who took on the massively difficult task of writing the health reforms that passed the legislature last year. Making the the health care system work is one of the major tasks in the next decade and someone with Steve Walsh's intelligence and experience in the field would bring real value to the table. He is also a witty and articulate political man who is able to work with his fellows and defend the principles of the Democratic Party forcefully.
The Governor should not appoint our Senator. The people of Massachusetts have the right to vote for that office. The law was changed before so that Mitt Romney, who was Governor at that time, could not just appoint a person of his choosing, and to simply change it back now is wrong.
Ha, the Dems don't think you should have the choice of whether to join a union or not, what makes you think they want you to choose your Senator?
I have to wonder if Kerry is so covetous of the post that he is willing to take it after the entire world knows he was the second choice? It is certainly dismaying to see the Republicans play political gotcha, although it is not surprising, since both parties now display all the maturity of three-year-olds. It will be equally dismaying if the Democrats play tit-for-tat with the appointments of the next Republican President, although the GOP will have no 'right' to complain about the shoe being on the other foot.
The Dems started this game of gotcha decades ago with their political assassination of Supreme Court nominee Bork. Proponents of Roe v. Wade share part of the responsibility for the toxic atmosphere in DC.
"Proponents of Roe vs. Wade?" Really? As opposed to, say, the gun lobby?
Susan Rice was opposed not just by GOP senators but even by members of her own party. Her record on U.S. policy in Africa since the 90s has been dismal. She is not qualified to be our secretary of state.
You're right Ozark, but I think the GOP goofed here. We should have been talking about her record, not what she said as a spokesperson for the Obama administration.
Oh, gee, you think maybe people should have questioned her record and not what happened in Benghazi? No kidding. Because the GOP may have won the battle but winning the war in getting farther and farther away. The GOP is seeming more and more like a bunch of arrogant, know-it-all bunch of airheads who are passing their last gas before they are sent to the nursing home.

Please, please keep Senator Kerry in the Senate.
We can't face fighting another campaign against Scott Brown, who obviously thinks he deserves the job, and we do NOT want him back in the Senate. Despite all his "moderate, bipartisan" talk, his voting record shows he is nothing of the sort. Moreover, his behavior in the debates with Elizabeth Warren showed his true colors as a nasty, mean dirty trickster. He had nothing substantive to compaign on (except lies and misrepresentations) so he resorted to name-calling. Keep this jerk out of the Senate!
Go Scott Go! Statistically proven bipartisan voting Senator.
Frankly, I think John McCain it a blow hard, and, if he weren't a "hero" from prison camp (and being imprisoned does not make you a hero, by the way) he would be just another old man with a chip on his shoulder and no one would pay much attention to.
'
Rice pulls out; talk turns to Kerry" ACTUALLY, talk should turn to Hillary Clinton. Hillary needs to testify before the House and Senate NOW, about what she knew and when she knew it. Right now, Hillary seems to have suddenly developed a "Diplomat's Illness'.
