State senator from western Mass. thinks he could benefit from divisive US Senate primary race

As three congressmen from eastern Massachusetts weigh potential candidacies in a US Senate special election campaign, one state senator from the extreme western part of the state thinks he may be able to replicate what Scott Brown did nearly three years ago.

State Senator Benjamin Downing Courtesy photo Democratic state Senator Benjamin Downing of Pittsfield thinks that if there is a divisive party primary in any campaign to replace US Senator John F. Kerry, US Representatives Stephen F. Lynch, Michael E. Capuano, and Edward J. Markey could carve up the more populous Boston area and give him the opportunity to win the nomination by holding the entirety of his current district in the Berkshires.

Loudmouth Markey, Stevie the Brick Lynch, and Mikey the Pelosi lapdog Capuano... What a herd . . . Johnson forgot to mention Vicki the K, the Boston Herald's seeming outside favorite for Liveshot Kerry's long-sat-in Senate seat - at least as an appointed fill-in. Might as well let this Downing guy into the herd, though whether far better known and far more respected in a state-wide sense Silvio Conte would have bothered to flip his hat to succeed Liveshot. . . Silvio was a real pol, a smart guy able to help an ex-U.S. spy deal with imprisonment in Yugoslav jails back in the 1960s and work across the House aisle on major issues. . . One thing to be sure, Downing might offer something new. .. Wonder whether he can match Scott Brown with promises of across-the-aisle graciousness. . .
