WASHINGTON — All but ending chances for an assault weapons ban, Democratic leaders said Tuesday that the firearms legislation the Senate will debate next month would not include the provision that gun-control advocates pressed for after an assault-type weapon was used in the Newtown, Conn., school shootings in December.
Majority leader Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said he wanted to bring a gun bill to the full Senate that would have enough support to overcome any GOP attempts to prevent debate from even starting. He expressed concern that including the assault weapons provision might effectively block passage of any bill at all.

Very disappointing.
Sen. Harry Reid is a fraud and turns out to be a shill for the NRA and gun manufacturers after all...SHAME on him any other Democrat who talks about gun control but does not fight for it! It's time to elect people who are not afraid to stand up against the NRA's money and influence. The gutless wonders have let our children down once again.
"Majority leader Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said he wanted to bring a gun bill to the full Senate that would have enough support to overcome any GOP attempts to prevent debate from even starting. He expressed concern that including the assault weapons provision might effectively block passage of any bill at all." ..So Harry says that it's perfectly OK for any Democrats to vote against the assault weapons ban, but it's not OK for Republicans to vote against the gun ban...Harry expects the news media to let him get away with such a fraudulent statement.
Harry Reid also blamed the Sequester and Republicans for the mortr explosion and deaths of Marines at a training camp. He claimed that the Sequester blocked extra training funds. An absoultely DISHONEST claim made on the Senate floor. If Harry were a Republican, the news media would be calling for his removal.
People involved in this "gun debate" tend to forget a few things.
There are 80 million gun owners in this country.
They know how to write, call and email their representatives.
The NRA therefore is not the ONLY voice heard by congressmen.
Some democratic congressmen are gun owners. This debate is not strictly along party lines. Those who try to label Republicans as "pro gun" are making a mistake, and vice versa.
Some congressmen are more "constitutionalists" than others, regardless of party lines.
Many congressmen are aware that we do not run this country based on "popular opinion" or "polling data". (though they are careful when it comes to that information when attempting to get elected)
Trying to turn this into a Dem v Rep argument is stupid.
I thought you didn't care what the majority thought. I thought you were an independent thinker without any allegiance. Arguing that there are 80 million gun owners and I'm one is arguing to the numbers not the policy. "Some congressmen are more "constitituitionalist"" I assume that is the interpretatin that you agree with, not necessarily the SC.
You seem to have forgotten the purpose of the munitions of "military" weapons and that isn't target shooting. But what's the point no matter how you spin it, you simply see only your side of any argument. You've pretty much proven that.
Turk, where in what I wrote did I say I cared what the majority thought? Nowhere. I did not say I was one of the 80 million in this comment, though I certainly am.
I actually took no side in the above comment, in the one down below, I most certainly did.
Trying to figure out your "munitions" comment. Again. Are you trying to say that 5.56 has more killing power than a 30-06 deer hunting round? I certainly hope not, given your prior military experience. Many states do not allow 5.56 (.223) because they feel it is not powerful to cleanly kill a deer.
I regularly target shoot with my AR15, so much for your idea on that.
By the way, since you are so in love with the government, care to give me your spin on what the DHS is doing with 1.2 billion rounds of hollow point ammunition (which is the same ammunition CA wants to outlaw because it is so deadly) and buying 7,000 fully automatic AR15's? Oh, most states only allow hunting with hollow point ammunition, but the anti gun types never bother asking why that might be, instead, they think it sounds all sorts of killy, so it should be banned.
I am pleased as punch this has happened. Her dumb AWB had absolutely no effect back in 1994, now she wants to turn the screws down even tighter, it will have the same lack of results.
To quote her from back in those days "Mr. and Mrs America, turn em all in." She hasn't changed one bit. Her end game is a complete and total ban on guns. No thanks.
