Three workers will lose their jobs under the city’s plan to fold the Office of Business Development into the Economic Development Cabinet.
Lisa Pollack, spokeswoman for the Department of Neighborhood Services, said that in planning for the consolidation, the city carefully analyzed job functions that overlapped.
“As a result, three positions are being eliminated, as these roles will not be needed in the new office,’’ Pollack said in an e-mail to the Globe.
She said one of the employees will retire. The others will stay on through June to close out projects underway.
Pollack said the department is eliminating an assistant director and a systems manager. The deputy director for the unit will be stepping down to puruse other opportunities.

Despite two Globe requests, Pollack did not release the departing employees’ names. She said the number of employees being transferred is 16, and no other eliminations are planned.
“To be clear, these departures are only a reflection of the new direction the office is taking. We are grateful for these employees’ service to the people of Boston,’’ Pollack said.
Laura Oggeri, the mayor’s spokeswoman, said no other layoffs are planned at City Hall.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh last month released the city’s small business plan and the consolidation. The city also completed an audit of the department.
