In a tweet that was immediately condemned by critics as sexist, President Trump launched a highly personal and graphic attack on MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski’s appearance on Thursday.

Trump claimed that he didn’t watch their morning show, “Morning Joe,” but heard its hosts were critical of him. He said the pair had spent time at Trump’s private club, Mar-a-Lago, at the end of the year and then claimed the host was “bleeding badly from a face-lift.”

Trump’s tweet was widely denounced Thursday, with two Republican senators calling it beneath the dignity of the office.

“Please just stop. This isn’t normal and it’s beneath the dignity of your office,” Ben Sasse said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Lindsey Graham said the tweet was “beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for MSNBC said “it’s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying, and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job.”

At a briefing on Thursday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president did not go too far with his tweet.

“I dont think that it’s a surprise to anybody that he fights fire with fire,” she said. “He’s not going to sit back and be atacked by the liberal media.”

In a tweet, an NBC executive also responded Thursday, saying that the president’s tweets were beneath his dignity.

The New York Times reported in January that Brzezinski and Scarborough had been spotted at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve party.

Scarborough pushed back against claims that the two were partying with a public official they cover, arguing they were at the party in a professional capacity.

Trump has made a habit out of launching attacks on women that some have called misogynistic. As a candidate, he reacted to Fox host Megyn Kelly’s presidential debate questions by saying she had “blood coming out of her wherever” during the debate.

As for Brzezinski, she responded Thursday morning with a less-than-subtle dig at Trump’s own appearance:
