Tracy Jan covers higher education for The Boston Globe, where her work has won the National Headliner Awards. She was a 2009 finalist for The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists for her coverage in Beijing of American universities courting Chinese students, stories that provided a window into that country's growing worldwide clout. Jan joined The Globe in 2004 as a K-12 education writer, covering the Boston Public Schools, the Massachusetts Department of Education and regional education trends. She spent a year chronicling the fate of three students and the headmaster of The English High School, America's oldest public high school that the state threatened to shut down for poor performance. Prior to the Globe, Jan worked at The Oregonian in Portland, Ore. Jan received her bachelor's degree in communication and master's degree in sociology from Stanford University. After college, she spent a year on a Fulbright Fellowship in Taipei, Taiwan working on her Mandarin and writing for an English-language newspaper. |
