Netanyahu, Obama take separate tacks on Iran threat

US urging economic sanctions Israeli leader sees a military option

With Israel warning that it may mount a military strike against Iran, President Obama welcomed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Monday, but signaled that he would press for more time for a campaign of economic sanctions to work on Tehran. Appearing with Netanyahu in the Oval Office before the met privately, Obama reiterated that the United States would prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, but he added, “We do believe there is still a window that allows for a diplomatic resolution to this issue.’’

China is the most significant strategic threat to American interests - NOT Iran. Iran is Israel's most significant strategic threat. The reckless Netanyahu government wants the US to do its dirty work by attacking Iran, and the right-wing zealots who post here in favor of a US attack on Iran are putting Israeli interests ahead of American ones. Israeli security analyst Barry Rubin calls these efforts by the partisans of the Israeli right a "misinformation campaign" (what President Obama calls "loose talk of war") while also stating categorically even in the title of his piece that "Israel Isn't Going to Attack Iran and Neither Will the United States" ( http://pjmedia.com/barryrubin/2012/01/26/israel-is-not-about-to-attack-iran-and-neither-is-the-united-states-get-used-to-it/ ).

An Iran armed with nuclear weapons would be a nightmare for the Middle East and for the world. Iran is already an aggressive supporter of terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Possession of nuclear weapons would only increase its aggressiveness and provoke a nuclear arms race in the region. Can Israel trust Obama to "protect its back"? "US intelligence analysts say they continue to believe that there is no hard evidence that Iran has decided to build a nuclear bomb." Israel is using an unconfirmed threat to persuade the US to do its heavy lifting versus an avowed enemy. Anyone up for Iraq II?

The real power in Iran rests with a group of depraved religious fanatics who wouldn't think twice about giving a nuke to terrorists. They must not be given the opportunity to do this. A 200 kiloton device - more than six times the power of the Hiroshima bomb - could easily be transported in a small truck. Such a device, detonated in Tel Aviv, would essentially "wipe Israel off the map." Hmmm...where have we heard that expression before? I don't blame Israel for being very nervous.
