US renounces Syrian rebels led by ex-pats

ZAGREB, Croatia — The Obama administration renounced the proclaimed leaders of the Syrian political opposition on Wednesday and said any group seeking to oust President Bashar Assad must reject attempts by extremists to hijack a legitimate revolution.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the Syrian National Council should no longer be considered the ‘‘visible leader’’ of the opposition. That made official what has been the increasingly obvious sidelining of an opposition group led mostly by middle-age Syrian expatriates.

So, what, some of the rebels trying to lead are not acceptable to "the village"? I think the "village" has the cart in front of the horse here. Let's recap the situation: innocents are dying by the score every day. The international community has been feckless, so far. The UN continues to try to negotiate with someone who won't negotiate (Assad). Russia and China are blocking action. OK, so a coalition of other countries act. You can't just let people die because the rebel leaders are members of the wrong political party.
