Israel, Hamas accept cease-fire

US, Egypt broker deal; talks will focus on grievances

CAIRO — Under intense Egyptian and American pressure, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas halted eight days of bloody conflict on Wednesday, averting a full-scale Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip without resolving the underlying disputes.

With Israeli forces still massed on the Gaza border, a tentative calm descended after the announcement of the agreement. The success of the truce will be an early test of how Egypt’s new Islamist government might influence the most intractable conflict in the Middle East.

Very good, sounds like Obama and Clinton both did an excellent job in their differerent theaters, and that an Islamist Egypt might actually be a bigger help than the previous dictatorship because of its greater credibility and influence with Arab insurgents that do not trust the West.

What is happening in Syria?

"There were immediate questions about the durability of the deal. Hamas, which controls Gaza, has in the past not fulfilled less formal cease-fires by failing to halt all missile fire into Israel." If this truce just gives Hamas time to rearm, then it is yet another FAILURE by the Obama administration.

Why do you see everything through the prism of your own personal politics ?  If Hamas/Iran do not want peace there will be none and it is not the failure of the US.  The US/Obama is not in charge of the world and we cannot dictate to it - we can only try.

Khaled Meshal, the top leader of Hamas, thanked Iran for its military support at a triumphal news conference in Cairo. ‘‘This is a point on the way to a great defeat for Israel,’’

As long as this is the Palestinian position there will never be peace and the Palestinians will continue to live in a squalid, over-populated ghetto.  Their choice.

Imagine Netanyahu and his chief of staff in SS uniforms.  Easy isn't it.

That is an outrageous and blatently anti-semitic statement.  The Globe shoud be embarrased to print it, and you should be be embarrassed to write it.  For shame.

It's been printed with photos in the Israeli press.  Your logic escapes me.  It appears that you are implying that there are no Israeli's with a fascist mentality.  Educate yourself before you play the religious card!

These depraved, sadistic barbarians (Hamas) live in a world of fantasy. A Hamas victory? You could have fooled me. If restrictions on entry into Gaza are lifted (or reduced), Hamas will re-arm. All the parties involved know this. Hamas could care less about Gaza. In fact, the more Palestinians (especially women and children) who are killed, the better it is for Hamas.
