China’s young in crisis of declining fitness

BEIJING — Xiao Ru spent her last year of high school studying from morning until late at night. That didn’t help her complete one particular assignment in her first year of college: a 1,500-meter run.

With two friends setting the pace beside her, she finished the university fitness requirement — barely. Moments later, she doubled over and vomited.

" China’s Young in Crisis of Declining Fitness," illustrates obesity's global reach.  It also shows how the decision to focus only on academics at the risk of health may change the trajectory of their economy.  The Chinese could look at the United States, which is just beginning to realize that if we don't focus on the health of our children we're going to have crushing health care and other costs confronting our competitiveness in the global market place.  Now is the time to change the growing tide of childhood obesity here.....and there.  We just have to make the commitment in all parts of our society to obesity prevention with physical activity and good nutrition, which in turn will help us perform better academically and as a society.
