COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Maldives authorities have called on the country’s Islamic ministry and judiciary to stop the public flogging of a teenage girl for having sex outside marriage, a government official said Friday.
A court last week sentenced the 15-year-old to 100 lashes after she admitted to having consensual sex, a court official said on condition of anonymity. The official said details of the consensual sex emerged when police investigated her complaint against her stepfather and another man of sexually abusing her.

Where are the words to describe this gross injustice in the first place? She was assaulted; she was the victim and complained to authorities but now is condemned. The 100 floggings will not only scar her body but inflict terrible damage on her spirit. Unjustly condemned and then to be flogged for being raped, one asks this venemous culture from what dark stench of a hole it crawled from.
