Pope Francis hosted the Israeli and Palestinian presidents for a prayer summit at the Vatican Gardens on Sunday.
Israeli President Shimon Peres (left) and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas shook hands at the summit.
The pope styled the unique gathering as "exclusively religious," but also as an expression of hope for an end to one of the world's most protracted conflicts.
In his comments, the pope was direct: "Peacemaking calls for courage, much more so than warfare."

The leaders also planted an olive tree. The pope said he hoped the symbolism would be "the beginning of a new journey."
