Assimilation, American style

In a world filled with ethnic antagonism and religious violence, the United States had found a paradigm for unifying the most ethnically, racially, and religiously varied population on the planet into a relatively tolerant and unified culture.

I get the impression Jacoby views the gist of this column to be an illustration of a somewhat obscure subject. Maybe it is to him. Being a Jew is a religion, not a nationality. People are Americans with a Jewish religion. They are NOT primarily Jews living in America. This should be applied to opinions concerning foreign policy.

Immigrants understood that the country they had come to was in some indispensable way better than the one they had left. __________________________ indespensibly? This statement is very dated and does not fit with Globalization and certainly doesn't fit with many educated immigrants. Many immigrants come to the USA for economic and/or educational opportunities. As long as those opportunities thrive then they stay. If not, people go back to their country of origin or to another (Europe, Canada, Australia, etc.). Actually, more and more, US citizens do the same. Many US-expat's live and thrive abroad. Jacoby loves to go on about immigration as it might have been c. 100 years ago. Tsarist Russia is gone. Irish potato famine is 160+ years ago. China and India are emerging (as are others. The old narrative is as stale as last year's turkey.

Wonderful column, Jeff. I have similar memories, from Catholic school, which set aside its general disapproval of Protestant sects to celebrate the Pilgrim Thanksgiving; looking back to my 4th grade, the nuns may have allowed the impression the Pilgrims were Catholic like us :)

So nice to read something positive this morning. I hope America can remain a place of cohesion, assimilation and cooperation among ethnic, economic and religious groups. We need to always remember that what binds us is a profound hope and dream of common prosperity and enlightenment.
