Which career ambitions should be encouraged?

Every November, with growing urgency as December deadlines approach, I write letters of recommendation for seniors trying to get into graduate school. Unlike the second round of ambitious young people leaving school and moving on to the next thing in life who will come asking for letters in April, the November round is dominated by those who have already decided that the way up, the way to their calling, leads first to more school.
