In the event of a disaster, a hospital relies on backup emergency power. But if the disaster is a flood, and the emergency equipment is located near or below sea level, the systems will fail and the situation for patients can become deadly. That’s why all the critical power and data equipment for Boston’s new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital will be located above the first floor. The fact that we’re beginning to see hard-headed financial decisions dictated by climate change predictions is significant.

Spaulding's design is just good common sense for a building on the edge of Boston Harbor, but why drag the tiresome global warming hokum into the discussion. All you need to flood the basement and ground floor of a building on the water's edge in Boston is a routine 12 foot tide accompanied by a hurricane or a nor'easter, particularly a slow moving nor'easter. If global warming is a consideration then Spaulding should plan to install some real heavy-duty air conditioning units as well. After all, if the globe warms up enough to melt the polar ice cap then it follows that Boston will have a climate similar to Miami.
flags is right; why drag alleged global warming into the debate about siting a hospital there? The "Great Flood Plain" is sitting on filled land that is more likely to be affected by the long overdue Cape Ann Fault earthquake, that none of the businesses which have already built there seemed to worry about. Not politically correct enough, probably.
The caps are NOT melting. Man liberals are ridiculous
It's good to hear that Spaulding is taking some measures to prepare for flooding due to climate change. Does anyone know whether Logan Airport is doing the same? Let's hope people realize soon that it will be more effective to deal with the causes of climate change instead of just the effects, which will get worse and worse if we don't curb emissions. Not wanting it to be real won't make it go away. As for the ice caps, just google "arctic melting" to see what's happening.
Sadly the cold calculations of capitalism have determined that it's too late to prevent the effect of global warming and have instead switched to trying to mitigation (ie. live with the problem) I would advise you to start buying flood insurance and maybe some land in Worcester. As to Logan Airport. We do have backup plans, they are called Worcester International, TF Green, Manchester and Hanscom. Don't worry the social upheaval and misery that will accompany all this will be visited on your children and grandchildren. The next generation is beginning to realize this and boy are they going to be upset with us, so don't worry about being cared for by society OR your familty because the conservatives will make the to government can't and I just covered why the young woudn't. It's interesting that a black & white photo of the Katrina situation was used instead of a color one (wasn't there color available in 2005) Doesn't that just add to the surrealness of the debate of global warming, by framing it into something from the distant past, an old argument...etc. Yes, Yes, whistling our way past the graveyard.
