President Obama’s commencement address to the graduating class at Barnard College on Monday had no throwaway lines. The much-touted speech was for and about women; choosing a women’s college was a signal that Democrats would use every opportunity to make gender, and gender rights, a political issue.

Brown and Obama are both wrong. I think it's a terrible idea. Retaining this one aspect of the mostly extinct code of chivalry is an honorable thing for our society, I think, and changing it wouldn't really represent any kind of worthwhile progress.
