Why UMass needs a 4.9 percent fee increase

One of the toughest decisions I have made in several decades in higher education was recommending an increase in tuition and fees for the coming year at the University of Massachusetts.

When the University can afford to grant a $450,000 sabbatical to an outgoing president of UMass and promise a identical salary when he returns to teach classes, there is no excuse to ask tax payers or students to bear this burden.

Why? To pay the likes of William M. Bulger.
