The last thing Mitt Romney needs is a John Kerry moment that conjures up F. Scott Fitzgerald’s description of the very rich: “They are different from you and me.”
But like an early Independence Day gift to Democrats, there it was: the image of a grinning Mitt and wife, Ann, enjoying a perfect summer day on a jet ski on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H., where the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee owns a lust-inducing lakefront vacation home. The photo of the contented pair skimming joyfully over the water is a natural bridge to the next, less-quoted, line from Fitzgerald’s 1926 short story, “The Rich Boy”: “They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft, where we are hard, cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand.”

vennochi, ya want a visual of the rich than take a ride by UMA.BOSTON and see what the KENNEDY FAMILY and their lap dogs like KERRY have bestowed and foisted upon the taxpayers of this nation. a 10s OF MILLIONS of dollar white elephant that KERRY snuck into a defense appropriation and for what? i'm not in love with romney especially about the LBOs but for the next 4 years i'll be damned if i'm giving my vote to that incompetent divisive fraud currently squatting in the oval office and with 10s of millions of men and women both un and underemployed, believe me i ain't expecting miracles. i just want somebody that can lead this country, not a party and no way is that person barack obama. not even close and unless all things were equal to vote for a person strictly on the basis of skin color is tantamount to suicide and lady, in this case things ain't even close to being equal. ma

LOL. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture.
Why don't you go back to reading the Herald instead of spreading BS.
The ones who really aren't " like you and me " are the transparent media types like Joan who harbor delusions of adequacy while writing " I hope Romney makes a mistake " columns like this drivel. And the predictable anti-Scott Brown garbage will follow just as sure as this guilt-ridden liberal lives and breathes, with her poisonous crayon at the ready.
Excellent point, but certainly lost on a charter member of the All-things Kennedy lap dog club.
This is too funny. I think this is Joan's "Yellow Journalism" moment.
besides all the obvious problems with this latest Globe Obama ad (Wolfeboro is not Sankaty, jet skis are not wind surfers, Kerry's problem was changing his mind --- that's Romney's too but the photo doesn't say that), what is a "lust inducing lakefront home?" Looking at the house makes you want to...
Democrats, not journalists! I am sooooo tired of this really idiotic prattle printed and pushed and pedaled about those nasty rich people we are supposed to hate. Maybe some voters who see this photo will feel that anger angst they keep talking about. where are those photos of Mrs. President partying in Europe with her "rich" friends. Isn't that meat for political grinder. Where are all those photos of El Obama at Marthas Vinyard racing around in his ski boat and knickers? That would really be "rich"! That, of course, would not enrage all those poor people with their Obama phones and food stamps.
This article is what is normally called...a cheap shot! Expected more from Joanie!
I say let the guy play like he wants if he can afford it. There is enough surrounding poor policy supported by Romney that the "picture worth a thousand words" is just a distraction. John Kerry's problem was he had difficulty communicating and had voted for a war that he should have known it would be a disaster. Mitt Romney has the same problems. He is a silly orator, supports policy that would be a disaster for the United States, and uses surrogates that are even deeper in the muck of destructive and obstructive politics to define him. Romney's likability is low even in his own party. He could not even get a majority of his own delegates elected to the Republican National Convention. Notable losing delegate candidates included Kerri Healey, his former Lieutenant Governor, Brad Jones, the State House Minority Leader, and Charlie Baker, the former gubernatorial candidate. Looking instead for deceptive side shows is what gets us poor leadership when we should be learning about the implications of Mr. Romney's governing philosophy.
Romney made his own money, Kerry married his money, and Obama collected royalties on the books that Bill Ayers ghost wrote for him, and which nobody read.
Would that it were, Joanie.
Just so we have this all on the record Sen Brown also frequently indulges in the same hawty tawty activities on Nantucket that affected Sen Kerry's campaign for President. Even more telling Senator Brown is going to have a fundraiser in the hoy polloy village of Sciasconset on Nantucket July 21st with the likes of CEOs of for profit health insurers, venture capitalist. Putnam Investment founder, real estate moguls in the mold of Donald Trump as prominent invited guests. These donors show whose camp the good Senator really stands with. Contrary to his ads he is not for us and this type of gathering should make that clear. Now Joan you could fill in more details on that if the Brown Campaign will let you. Why do such donors enthusiastically support Sen Brown's politics.
Generally speaking most people don't hate rich people. Of course some unthinking zealots read the article and see it as an attack on the rich, whereas Joan begins it by quoting from Fitzgerald and it is not wealth that is the issue but what wealth does to the psychology of some. Mitt whether one supports him or not is a pretty good example of the effect. When Mitt talks about safety nets or the middle class or even when he reaches for the friendly joke, the ponchos at the stock cars, he can't find the melody that can put him in tune with the "common folk". Even polling shows that uneducated white working class males who favor him over Obama by large margins actually don't like him. Not a question of policies or politics, just personality wise. Does it have an impact on his policies, probably to some small measure. It is after all a world view different perhaps than yours and mine. Can it have an impact on the election? That is something far more subtle. One thing we do know is "likeability" is a large factor in who many people vote for. An attribute that Mitt lacks.

The problem most people had with the Kerry moment was when asked about his wind surfing or snow boarding, instead of just saying he enjoys doing it, Kerry gave some abstract answer that nobody understood. Sort of like When Dukakis was asked if he believe in capital punishment if his wife was raped and murdered, he too avoided the question with an abstract answer.

Nice try, Joan. Jet-skiing is as blue collar as Harley Davidsons and NASCAR. And it's fun. You also missed the point that Mitt was letting Ann doing the driving, being a gentleman rather than mandatory macho .
T think there may be many more people who own jet ski than wind-surf. If owning a jet ski is a sign of wealth, then there must be a ton of rich people living in pretty average places in MA. But I'm going to guess not too many of them wind surf.
I sure wish i could afford to take some time off. But then, I don't have a mansion on a lake with two cadillacs and a few jet skis to enjoy a vacation at. I've never felt envious of Romney the fool though.
One MAJOR difference? A jet ski burns petroleum. Ergo, working class cool.
Joan's obsession with Mitt Romney, and her attempts to hurt him with snarky little hits like this are becoming creepy. Our country is in desperate need of true, seasoned leadership. All Joan cares about is the soap opera of visual imagery. Shameful.
Did I miss Joan's column about Ted and his boat?
*****I have never really warmed up to Mitt Romney. Having said that, what I see in this picture is man so content with himself he does not have to drive the jet ski. He has nothing to prove, as far as his manhood goes. No faked machismo here. Just a happy guy that has total confidence that his wife is capable of driving the jet ski. ANN ROMNEY- YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!
