Wake up, Capitol Hill

Another shooting tragedy erupts, and few have courage to talk gun control

Twelve people were killed and 59 were wounded early Friday at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. Earlier this week, 18 people were wounded in a shooting spree near the University of Alabama.

What is America waiting for?

Why bother writing new gun laws when the existing laws are not enforced? Does Hollywood share any of the responsibility for gun violence? After all it is hard to find entertainment whether movie or tv that is not based on all sorts of violence. Much of it involving guns.

There's no reason an average citizen needs an assault weapon. Protect yourself with a handgun, shoot game with a rifle, those thinks kind of make sense, but we seem to be eager to hand weapons of mass murder to nut cases. I don't see how that makes any sense at all.

Wake up, Derrick Jackson. First of all, political figures have learned that using horrible personal tragedies to promote a political agenda is unkind, unfeeling and exploitive; too bad some members of the press have not yet learned the same truth. Second, these same folks have learned that playing the race card - suggesting that once again, blacks are being victimized, this time by gun violence - is ludicrous, given that the shooters of blacks are largely other blacks; lunatics and criminals aren't racially selective - they hurt whoever is within reach. Third, "gun control", as proposed by people like Bloomberg and the Brady Bunch, amounts to gun confiscation from lawful gun owners, and denial of the right of self-protection for millions of law-abiding Americans of every race, gender and political orientation. You could strip every one of them of their lawfully-obtained and used guns, and you would STILL have tragedies like this one. When a deranged person decides to create havoc and harm, they find a way, using knives, cars, bombs, chemicals, or any other means they can conceive of in their twisted minds. Don't make the problems of crime and insanity worse by suggesting that you can "make everyone safe" by denying all of us who are NOT criminals or crazies our Constitutional rights and our basic human right to protect ourselves and our families. More and more, public figures are understanding that this is a trade that most Americans are unwilling to make. Instead, address your energies to the disillusionment and disconnection that leads predominately young men (but also some others) to commit crimes and pointless acts of violence, with guns or other means; it is not the object chosen by the actor that is significant, but the aberrant criminal behavior that needs to be understood and changed.

Yes, gun control certainly prevented the Norway massacre from happening. Oh, wait, no, it didn't.

So, tell me again why people need semi-automatic weapons ? How many lives would have been saved if the Aurora shooter had to reload after every shot ? To 6x6x6 I defy someone to kill and wound large numbers of people with a knife.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting that increased gun control will end all gun violence, including mass killings, but it's ludicrous to suggest that it wouldn't decrease the appalling rate of gun violence in our nation. Your "argument"is specious, but you know that. Norway's rate of gun violence is way below ours, but then virtually every country in the industrialized world has far lower rates than ours.

If you want an assault rifle join the military, they've got plenty! There is no reason for for the average citizen to own or need one. The shooter was obviously mentally ill. Mentally ill people should not own guns, especially assualt rifles! And, this has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment. You still have the right to own firearms but assault weapons sales should be restricted. Use hour head!

Oh yes, in a dark, crowded, smoky theater with panicked people running everywhere, the answer is more shooting?

I didn't read this piece. However, the fact that you can purchase this type of weaponry with the same ease as ordering Keurig K-cups from Amazon defies any rational analysis. I wish this could be discussed from an ethical perspective, e.g.: right or wrong. Unfortunately it can't. It's just institutionalized insanity.

The guy was wearing combat gear, including a bullet proof vest and throat protector. Plus Colorado allows concealed carry. Stupid, stupid comment.

I don't know why i'm wasting my time with you bleeding hearts on gun control! Instead of banning guns, ban criminals to prison or execution. ( I'm for the latter). Do you really think degenerate criminals care about how many gun controls their are? They'll laugh in our face as they coldly cut innocent people down! Gee! You don't have a gun to protect yourself and it's your right to have one under the constitution! Wake up America! Obey the laws and stand your ground! You have the right to protect your property and loved ones! I'm so sick about the rights of the criminals and not the victims!! The minute the dirtbag picks up that weapon he is accountable and responsible for his acts!! Period!!

I respectfully disagree. Anytime gang-bangers of any ethnicity cross the line and shoot "civilians"; that is, non-gang members, it makes the news. Yes, it is true that the general populace doesn't pay a lot of attention when it's just criminals shooting each other. If delinquents of certain specific ethnicities seem to be involved in a disproportionate percentage of violent crime, then that is an issue that should be addressed. And anything that can be done to enforce the laws regarding illegal possession of firearms is needed, and should be applied to equally to all citizens. Ironically, the very same folks who cry loudest in support of 2nd amendment rights are the ones who also cry loudest when gang-bangers have gun wars.

If you don't like the apples in this particular grove, then why do you shake the tree? Why are you still here? Most sensible people wouldn't waste time in environment they hate, and are despised. Fid the exit and use it.

AHA! A real nugent! More guns mean fewer shootings! The next time I leave the house, I should be packing heat so that I can be sure that nobody gets shot! How do you keep your ears from slamming together!

While you're at it Derrick, I have an issue with that 1st amendment too. I don't like when people swear. I don't like that the press can write whatever it wants. I don't like when I walk through the Common and there are large groups there. You know, while we're at it I think cops should be able to enter your house and search it whenever they want, that pesky 4th amendment has to go.

LavransRM: TheSystemWorked has posted this exact rant daily for the last month. Why he's still here is a mystery to us all.
