Every year in the Swiss Alps, some ill-fated skier careens off a cliff and falls to his death. Scores more perish in avalanches or in unexpected crevices in the glacial ice. But that doesn’t stop the people of the Alpine region from skiing and climbing. To the contrary. Continuing to scale the dangerous slopes is precisely what makes them who they are.
By the same token, in Spain, more than 500 professional bullfighters have been gored to death over the last four centuries. Yet matadors keep getting back into the ring. And who knows how many teenage boys from the Maasai tribe in East Africa have died trying to kill a lion with a spear? They did it because it’s dangerous. Because that’s what it took in their culture to be considered a man.

Hundreds of millions of weapons in private hands, billions of rounds of ammunition in circulation, and a species whose very survival once depended on violence. Toss in a loosely hinged young man overwhelmed with the stresses of modern life and these incident are as inevitable as they are disturbing. / / / Is this the world the founding fathers envisioned the Bill of Rights could lead to? Well yes, and that's why the critical preamble they put in the Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia..." is ignored and willfully misconstrued, to the peril of the innocent. / / / To quote Pogo: We've met the enemy, and he is us.
The good folks over at the NRA are planning legislation (common sense) which will require all persons of legal age (10) to carry their Glock 45 cal. "equalizers" to the movies, to school and to all family outings. It's about time we prevent liberal wussies from taking away the "Amurica" from our nation's fifth graders.
No mention of the Oslo massacre, Farah? Conspicuous by its absence, isn't it?
Try to stay on topic.
NYC has 4th strictest gun law in USA, yet 4,000 guns confiscated this year so far. People still get shot. Mayor Bloomberg suggested to Charlie Rose that police around the country "should go on strike" until guns are voted banned from ownership. Is he nuts?..and how will the gangs and criminals vote?: "Yes" of course, since they will ignore the law. The Colorado event could have been perpetrated by explosives, an incendiary device, gas, it happened to be guns. Don't beat on me, I do not own a gun, have treated many GSWs (gunshotwounds) some hunting, some suicides, some accidental, some not. Keep your guns just lock em up, and ignore Jim Braude types. I have a 6-clip rifle and know how to use it. I can defend my state and family and fulfill my constitutional duties. The NRA and others have been irresponsible in interpreting our right to bear arms. They are part of the problem. Does the 2nd amendment give me the right to operate a jet fighter or atomic bomb? I suppose there is a measure of national security provided by the gun nuts, the NRA, and their congressional puppets. What country would think that they could ever invade and control us when our own police or militia can't? We are too "manly" to be controlled. Great way to view the issue Stockman.

We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us - if at all - not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men.
This is so true. Forget all the hand wringing that happens after every massacre. We Americans have made a conscious decision that a certain amount of gun violence is acceptable as long as nothing interferes with our rights to keep as many of our toys as we wish, so nothing will change. I too support the Second Amendment, but some of us do take it to extremes.
I'm for gun control, but it must be said that if a few people in the audience were armed, the gunman may not have been able to shoot as many as he did.

Every home in Switzerland is required to have a rifle. What can we learn from Switzerland? http://www.guncite.com/swissgun-kopel.html

I have to wonder what would be the reaction of the NRA if one of their own members were to shoot up the NRA offices using legally-obtained assault weapons with 100-round magazines? Of the massacres to date most came to a stop when the shooters either 1) ran out of ammunition, 2) were stopped while changing ammunition clips, or 3) had to stop when their weapons malfunctioned. Muzzle-loaded, single-shot muskets were the state of the art at the time the Founding Fathers wrote our constitution. What the NRA lacks most of all is a sense of perspective.

Most of the people watching The Dark Night Rises are teenagers. Are you suggesting they all carry loaded weapons? So in a dark movie-house with tear-gas in the air someone starts shooting and 200 teenagers carrying loaded handguns all start shooting at the same time. You think that's going to be a better situation?
We need Federal Leadership on this issue. There is no reason to allow citizens to own assault weapons with high capacity magazines. Same goes for extended clips on semi-automatic handguns. No need for it. You are never going to get into a protracted gun battle with a robber or a mugger. A standard Glock handgun carries between 15 to 17 rounds. If you need more than that I suggest you are stuck in a Steven Seagal movie in your head and you need professional help.

We're not talking about arming teen agers. If I was facing this guy, I'm saying I would like the ability to defend myself, or have someone else stop him.
If you don't like guns in America, move to Canada! They would be happy to take you!
