White male Democrats fading in Congress

It may not be clear before Election Day who will win the White House or which party will control the House and Senate. But here’s a prediction that’s all but ironclad, and reflects a largely unappreciated change that could have just as much influence on the direction of the country: After the election, white men will constitute a minority of the Democratic House caucus for the first time in history.

This milestone is part of a broader trend that goes well beyond politics. The United States is expected to become a “majority-minority” nation within 30 years. That trend is being reflected in the Democratic congressional caucus, but only barely on the Republican side. In 1950, white men made up 98 percent of Democrats and 97 percent of Republicans in the House; today, 86 percent of Republicans are white men, but only 53 percent of Democrats.

It is simply a function of Democrats pandering to various victim groups, and not seeking to advance the good of the nation. In my view, a minority is fully assimilated to American society when he or she becomes a Republican. Because it is then, and only then, when they stop seeking special favors for their own minority group. Blacks, Hispanics and Asians do not come to the GOP to exploit a perceived victim status for their ethnicity. But that is exactly why they become Democrats. As our nation becomes more multi cultural, it will also see the GOP become more multi cultural. This is because as more minorities assimilate, they will stop acting as victims, and act out of doing what is good for our nation. This is why they become Republican.

"Folks" can believe what Mr. Green wrote today? Let me summarize: White "men" don't like government - African Americans, hispanics and asians love government". What I didn't read was any substantive evidence to support this simplistic declaration by another Globe idiophyle. Inferred is that white men are fleeing the Democrat party as fast as their skinny white legs will move. words printed in this paper are likely to be accepted as gospel by many readers. What's missing? Mr. Green's statistical sources, a review of their validity and a true sociological study to determine what they mean. Is this another "White men can't jump" story? The handwriting on the wall is clear. A country divided by hatred, fear, and class warfare is being promoted by Mr. Obama's campaign managers and fiction writers like Mr. green for the Globe. I believe that our country is divided into segments, not by color, but by those who wish to preserve the American dream in a country where we educate our children and hope their futures are better than ours. We further hope they will live in a nation where its citizens still believe that individuals, not governments build their businesses and futures.

You are correct that there is a continuum from democrat to republican, but it doesn't run from un-American to American. It runs from moral to immoral. Human nature being what it is, Republicans will always get a few "minorities" to claim they believe the party line of the Right, the talking points, the reverse logic etc., but if you are predicting a big shift in the racial make-up of the Grand 'Ol Party, there had better be some changes in leadership. Republicans like Pat Buchanan still speak for the party.

Joshua Green did include some interesting statistics about white males in Congress. One would have to be blind or willfully ignorant not to notice the fact that the income gap, our political divide and our physical separation/segregation fall along racial lines. Look at the anecdotal evidence all around you. Whites will soon-enough become a minority in America. Do you think the Republican message of exclusion will make more minorities vote your way? How in the world will the party of rich old white men attract the numbers needed? I was never great at math but the numbers just don't seem to add up.

There is racism and intolerance among all races and political parties. Witness black clergies response to the addition of a pro-gay marriage stand to the Democratic platform. And I'm wondering to what extent liberals label the expectation that all people pull their own weight, work hard and pay taxes as racism. I think if you looked you would find that for the most part that hard working people of any race are welcome in the Republican party.

Interesting ... the percentage of white males in the Democratic party matches the rate at which U.S. citizens pay federal taxes. I expect both percentages to decrease, that's what Democrats call Progress. And I expect all our kids to be burdened with our debt for their entire lives.

Why must one be prejiduced if they think people should work for something rather than be dependent on government hand-outs?

Running on a policy of "rob Peter to pay Paul", the Democratic Party will be able to count on Paul's enthusiastic support. The problem with socialism, as Margaret Thatcher pointed out, is, however, that eventually you run out of other people's money to spend.

Libelous and Racist. Why is this guy still here?

My previous comment that the term "big government" was a euphemism used by Republicans for a wariness concerning the increasing clout and influence of minorities in America was removed by the Globe? Wow! I mean - yeah, it's a general statement pulled out of my rear end with little to no empirical or statistical evidence to back it up, but how is that different from almost every other comment here this morning?

Was it my comment that Pat Buchanan was a leading spokesperson for the Republicans? I know he's fallen out of favor in the media but he still holds a good deal of sway. Look at some of the others; Rush Limbaugh? Sean Hannity? These white men have all made very public statements about how the country is on some kind of downhill slide now that we no longer live in Leave It To Beaver Land.

The term "majority-minority" is ridiculous and meaningless. It seems that what most people who use the term really mean is "non-white majority." So why don't they just say what they really mean?
