JOAN VENNOCHI | welfare and the election

An old wedge issue returns in the campaign

Once again, it’s time to kick America’s poor.

A new ad from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accuses President Obama of “gutting welfare reform.” In opening this line of attack, Romney is resurrecting an old stereotype — the lazy, greedy welfare recipient, who will do anything to avoid honest employment — and reviving an old line of attack against Democrats as enablers.

So do you really think anybody is listening or paying attention to this stuff? What ad?

Joan, the problem with the Obama action is that it took the standard route of Obama law making-regulation by fiat. Why not bring a bill to the congress and debate its merits, and settle on a solution that a majority in congress can support? Obama has shown that his imperial presidency does not need a congress, when he sees a constituency in need, voila! your problem is now written into law, and you can vote for Democrats here..... NEW PARAGRAPH In the Obama world, the Democratic process of passing laws is just an impediment, for his rule to create the greater good. Scary, ins't it?

I like this phrase "Some Americans to resent fellow citizens who need help". Its much easier to take than self-centered or mean spirited or self-righteous ... It really softens the blow. Much easier to take than showing octogenarians and babies and people with disabilities thrown out on the street. 'Some Americans' are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple. -Barry Switzer

New book out that states Obama wants to end the suburbs and centralize things around cities. Have not read it in detail buton the surface is this another step in that process? Richmond, ur correct..has any president declared things null and void as many times as Obama. 1200 days and counting for a senate budget

He wants to "end the suburbs"? It's truly sad that you believe this nonsense.

If you supposed 50% of welfare recipients were fraudulent, they still could not equal the damage caused by Wall St.(who crippled the entire world), multi-national corporations, business tax gamers and the like. Its an old GOP strategy to threaten ignorant people with loss when they themselves walk off with the store, AKA "de-regulation", "less government" "individual responsibility" and the like.

Apparently, Joan has missed all the Herald's coverage (conspicuously absent from the Globe) about the EBT scandals plaguing the commonwealth. Sorry to break it to you, Joan, but the poor aren't all saints and the rich aren't all devils. And as the better paper's reporting has shown, welfare recipients scamming the system are neither fairy tales nor are they any longer the exception to the rule. To the contrary, in Massachusetts taking advantage of the system has become the norm. As Margaret Thatcher once said, "The problem with socialism is sooner or later you run out of other people's money." Massachusetts is poised on that tipping point: Very soon, there won't be enough money coming in from those of us who work to support the tattoos, liquor and lottery ticket habits of those who don't. And where will your sainted poor be then, Joan?
