TAMPA
In between convention speeches, Republican delegates swarmed the corridors of the Tampa Bay Times Forum, buying soft pretzels and hot dogs, and lingering in a converted sports shop now dubbed the Romney-Ryan Store. Like the GOP ticket itself, the commemorative memorabilia on sale was, on the convention’s first day, more of a curiosity than a source of excitement.

I have watched this race develop and I have commented on some of the outrageous statements made by the candidates. However, when it comes down to it if the election were merely between Romney and Obama I could frankly care less who won. I don't see any real differences anymore than I saw any great differences between McCain and Obama. I'm not a zealot I don't identify as an R or a D. However, the election isn't about these two men. The election is really about who will control the crazies that currently control the US House and may control the Senate. I am pro-choice, pro civil rights, pro voting rights, anti the intrusion of govt. into womens health care, pro health care, pro veterans benefits, SS and Medicare. These things are important too me, the economy will do what the economy does regardless of who's President. I cannot and would not in conscience vote for Mitt Romney for one main reason. He would not and could not stand up to the crazies. Sorry Mitt but you just don't have the spine for it.
Attaturk: EXCELLENT post!!
It feels like this article is a snapshot of a primitive tribe on some far-away island who are all joining hands, making unintelligible grunts, jumping up and down in rhythm, and convincing themselves that they are the answer to humanity's problems.

If I might add one thing. I am pro-union. By that I mean pro-United States. The crazies now in the House wish to re-fight the lost cause. Re-fight states rights. I do not wish to live in 18th century or 19th century America. When voting keep in mind the dream of some of these southern representatives. From reconstruction to George Wallace to today's Hucabee the civil war never really ended.
I could care less how someone looked, I care about there competence in getting things done, their experience on how to produce jobs, not blaming everyone else for their own incompetence like Pres. Obama does, but then can you blame him, because of his lack of experience shows. Mitt Romney isn't a fuzzy wazzi person, but a competent business person that does his best to get things done...His company took failing businesses and turned many around, more success then losses. That is what we need to restart this country. We are a country of builders, not a country of I am owed people. Pres. Obama wants everyone under government control with freebies (just like Greece & others) and then they control them, because the work ethic is no longer there. We are not that country and that is why many immigrants want to come here is the opportunity to be successful and not serfs of this administration.
The country is not a business and the President can not at his will just change operations as someone buying a company can. The President must also carefully consider the consequences unlike the capitalist who is obligated to do only one thing -- maximize the return on investment. In his unscripted moments he shows himself to be woefully out of touch with most Americans. A gentleman's bet is $10,000. Many enjoy NASCAR, he enjoys spending time with owners. For those who need more money for college, just borrow from your parents. Where does he think most people get their tuition from in the first place? Why just watch the Olympics when you can participate with your dressage horse that is also a $77,000 per year medical expense you can deduct on your taxes.
Everyday life is so far from the realm of comprehensible for Mitt Romney that I don't think he is capable of understanding the inequity his party promotes.

Matt Taibbi more than any other chronicler of the etiology of the Wall Street madness, the 2007 Great Recession that is responsible for the economic sewer we have been since then, knows EXACTLY who Mitt Romney is.
Read his analysis if you want a GREAT understanding of this man who hopefully will NOT be elected president!

I noticed the Globe pulled my comment. One wonders why? Was it emphatic? Yes it was. Was it heartfelt? Yes, it was. Was it true? I believe it was. I do NOT believe it was over the top but reflected the anger I and others feel at reading an article which may influence an election although I truly believe newspapers do not have that kind of clout they used to have.
If I overstepped by my incredulity at Peter Canellos than I suppose I should have dialed it back a bit. BUT I still would iterate nearly all of what I said. This Republican Party is ALL the things I stated and more. Its treatment and rudeness at our first president of color is abysmal, hurtful and mean and its candidate must encompass it. I do not think I was over the top or erroneous in stating that.
"nrosen" actually all it takes is for someone to push the report abuse button. The moderator if there is one never reads it to find out if it was abusive.

HHK - When I said I was pro-union I pointed out that by pro-union I meant pro-United States. Pro federalism, pro the supremacy of the federal government over the states. I stated that in today's House, today's Republican Party the Civil War never ended, from Reconstruction, to Wallace, to Huckabee of today and the House of Rep. there has always been a segment who would re-fight the lost cause. I stated I did not wish to live in 18th or 19th century America and therefore could not vote for a man who could not stand up against the forces of historical regression. (NP) However, let me add I am also pro-union of the kind you originally thought I was speaking of.

HHK - I do agree with you regarding unions and their importance to a strong middle class. Perhaps in my case it is my age and the benefits that the unions brought forth for my parents and myself. Regretfully a younger generation has come to believe that "free enterprise" means that only coporations and business may hold the power of "collective" action, that the worker has no right except the right to walk. A sad misunderstanding of the balance of power. One that will not be corrected until the inequities of our society become so great that the working elements in society will find no other recourse except their right for collective power.
What a waste of "newsprint".
Romney may be their final choice. but then, he was the only one not crazy in the ned. No, not crazy, just plain greedy and full of ego.
Romney has never, EVER, done anything for anyone but himself and his family and his cronies. he has never created jobs. He has never ensured the health and welfare of anyone, unless you consider RomneyCare a good plan which, if you do, is ObamaCare.
Romney will sound the deathknell of the USA if he is elected. God save us all.
