As the rioting subsided in Libya, I felt that faint flush of superiority that comes from living in an enlightened, progressive country where the population can handle absurd Internet postings. It lasted for all of a day, until humor-impaired creationists started rampaging on Dr Pepper’s Facebook page.
The genesis of their indignity was a sketch called “Evolution of Flavor.” A parody of Rudolph Zallinger’s famous illustration “The March of Progress,” it shows an ape (“pre-Pepper”), a Cro-Magnon man (“Pepper discovery”) and modern man (“post-Pepper”), the latter a carbonation-based life form striding upright, fully evolved and full of caffeine. “Now that’s progress,” the caption says.

These people aren't humor impaired, they are emotionally impaired. I mean that sincerely. Unable to cope with a modern world, unwilling to face their own mortality they shut out all possiblitites and hide behind what they hope are solid truths. They are not truly religious. They are merely frightened.
There is some truth to that, which is why a belief in a God could be a good thing. That is, if the man-made religions bulit up around the basic belief, with their men-idiots/ideologues/fanatics running them, and preaching their individual intolerences, hatreds, and bigotries, could all just vanish...... Catholicism, Islam, Bhudasim, Judaism, etc. and have all people talk to God directly, and have the "ideologies" be all inclusive, no intolerences, all unconditional love for everyone, no hell, no hate....it could be good. But these A-hole religions, and their A-hole mostly men preachers, in their stupid looking turbans, robes and hats, which make them feel important, making up all their crap, make it impossible.
Jennifer, thanks for the laugh!! "Opposite of irony is wrinkley" has just vauted to my number 1 comment to use when I feel like being dopey, which is often. Just a thought on the "fragile" business....I think what the Church is referring to is that future clergy must be strong enough to stand up to hours of tough depositions, and vigorous cross examinations by state prosecutors, when they inevitably find themselves having to defend their individual actions, or the actions of the church. And I've been told that God deosn't seem to want to help folks out in these situations as many people, finding themselves being presented with their own hyporacy and lies, have asked God to make this dissapear, and he never has. LOL ;-)
that's make "them" disappear...sorry
Love your "opinion"! Keep 'em coming.

Yes, people need more of a sense of humor. And yes, there are way too many fragile people in the world. But foolish videos or stupid internet jokes are not really what are setting people off. The excessive unequal distribution of resources in the world has reached a tipping point. The mideast is a pit of blinding weath and blinding poverty. America is heading in the same direction. Modern technology has created more opportunities for greedy people to fleece people whom they've never even come into contact with. And it has also created opportunities for the people who have been fleeced to see just how much the manipulators have gained. It is that imbalance which causes riots and firefights about seemingly inconsequential things. Not a lack of humor.
Also very, very true. And it is that "blinding poverty" that pushes people, who don't believe they have any HOPE whatsoever, of things on Earth ever getting any better, to look to and believe in a life hereafter, to sustain in them in their seemingly HOPELESS day to day existence here on earth.
And allow me to take that thought just one last step. What is the one thing that hurts most.....not your own deprivation and suffering...but watching your kids being hurt and deprived. i think a lot of the adults that go "nuts", are going nuts because they can no lnger see the children in pain. You fix the poverty in the world, and you relegate "religions" and whatever they preach, to far less importance.
If you have to choose between science and mythology, choose the science. Really.

I just have one more thought for the day...appropos of nothing, except perhaps upcoming Halloween, but noting that someone brought up Catholics (probably me).
I saw something on the news where a bunch of Bishops were all dressed up in their finery for something or other, and I had this question: How do those guys actually look in the mirror and watch themselves put on one of those big, fat pointed hats, and not keel over convulsing in laughter??! As a friend of mine said, they look "re-f'n-diculous"!!!!
Right on, Jennifer. The scariest thing is how little it takes to spark the ire of the fearful and humorless. There are plenty of real biases and hateful acts in this world to which we should respond - but it's clear that many folks just can't tell the difference. Wouldn't it be lovely if all those people gave just a fraction of the energy they expend being outraged at the ridiculous to doing something positive for their community - or themselves?
