Lena Dunham’s joke ad is a campaign flashpoint

Oh, what are we going to do for entertainment when this presidential race is over? When the campaigns stop sending out videos we can react to with joy and horror?

The latest: the pro-Obama video from writer/director/actress/Voice-of-Millennials Lena Dunham, which has whipped conservatives into a horrified frenzy.

Comments

It is an illustration of the campaign's desperation.  They do not run ads that tout Obama's successes as president, because there are not any.  Instead, they run the silly ads like this one, designed to woo the stupid vote, which can be enamored by the feel good metaphor of having Barack Obama be your "first".  The problem with this strategy is that Obama already has the stupid vote locked up.  It will do nothing to move the intelligent voter away from Romney.

Obama is foundering, and seeking some way to connect with the masses that have lost faith in him.  Little hits like this will only entertain the stupid people who have adored this president from day one, and he has failed the nation.  Maybe he should run an ad about a girl's first kiss.....

Frankly Joanna I'm kinda surprised to see you writing about this given the news cycle of for other papers died last week. The ad is designed to appeal to younger voters. Does it work? Who know we'll see but to try and make this any more than what it is - an ad starring a celebrity -- is kinda well, sad. And please actually read up on Girls rather than just reading what other people write about it. The actresses aren't all the daughters of celebrities. Unless you consider boho artists and Hair Band musicians from the 80s to be "celebrities". But they are indeed all white which is problematic and has ... absolutely nothing to do with the ad.

Guess you missed the Morgan Freeman ad? Or the fact that the freefall stopped. Bin Laden gone. Job numbers improving. Nope, no accomplishments here.

Good Lord! Conservatives are becoming as bad as Liberals. Now they can't take a joke. We are doomed.

Today's 'Conservatives' and 'Liberals': there's a difference?

I'm not horrified. I'm embarassed for Democrats. Obama betrayed the Americans in Benghazi and Democrats and the media (redundant) all want to focus on how this piffle from a homely girl has "horrified" conservatives. We are horrified by this President and the media that tries to cover up for him at every turn.

"homely girl"  Really?  You're attacking her looks?  Perhaps you should reconsider that whole embarrassment thing.

Yeah, that's what my post was about. No wonder you're a lefty; you don't comprehend what you read.

"This assumes that, somehow, women don’t realize that health care costs factor into economic concerns. It assumes that they take, at face value, Romney’s wink-nod claims that he wouldn’t do anything to erode women’s health or abortion rights. (The real issue isn’t what Romney believes — a truth that seems unknowable, anyway — but what he’d do if some Republicans in Congress have their way.)" THANK YOU, just for writing this paragraph. I am at the end of my rope with the Romney campaign's disgusting effort to convince everyone that somehow--possibly if we were all to travel through a wormhole to bizarro world--healthcare issues and women's reproductive rights somehow have nothing to do with economics. Perhaps in the minds of GOP politicians they really don't, because these men either assume women just hang out in their robe in slippers all day anyway so we might as well be ill or pregnant or poor, or more, frighteningly, they want us to be home all day ill or pregnant or poor so we won't meddle in the big boys' affairs. Like Rush Limbaugh, I fear for our daughters because if these backward misogynists have their ways, they will be forced into marriage at 18 and spend their lives in the servitude of men. This past weekend I saw a few of my friends with their baby daughters and all I could think was my god, what kind of world will they live in?

"The Romney campaign has gained some traction, in these last few weeks, by suggesting that the Obama campaign is insulting voters’ intelligence, churning out puns and Big Bird references in lieu of more serious arguments." And reporters and pundits across the land treat those suggestions as if they were solidly supported by facts, which they aren't.

Perhaps if the right, especially Fox News indicated they understood parody, it would be easier to know when Romney is joking.

like Maddow and Mathews?

Hmm. A conservative mentions "chicago" and the libs scream its "code words" for racism. The degenerate libs do a "once you go black, you never go back".... and its all good fun. No racism here folks...remember we are LIBERALS and can say wahtever we want... Disgusting.

CONSERVATIVES can say wharever they want too, as long as it's carefully reasoned and based in reality. Alas watching Fox, et al., doesn't really help you to do that.

A real funny ad with a cute twist.  I wish people like Weiss however would not classify these people as "conservatives".  I'm tired of every religious whack job, every libertarian, every off the wall anti-government type getting the label "conservative".  These people are not "conservatives".  "Conservative" are not knuckledraggers, not morons, not simpletons, not unthinking dolts.  "Conservatism" is an intellectual creature that is a sound and basic philosophical viewpoint of the world.  Does anyone really believe that Barry Goldwater or William F. Buckley would associate with these intellectual midgets.  Not hardly.

Conservatives do not delve into childish reviews of ads or statements or play around with the facts.  Conservatism in and of itself does not view govt. as the enemy or to big or to small, it simply must serve its purpose effectively and serve the needs of the nation without impinging upon personal freedoms.  This "faux conservatism" of today does nothing but impinge upon the rights of others and treads dangerously across the seperation of Church and State.  I do wish the talking heads could be more succinct in describing this new "temper tantrum" as something other than conservatism.  Conservatism doesn't deserve the insult.

Don't get me wrong I don't just blame liberals.  I blame the Limbaugh's and the Walsh's and the Romney's who call themselves "conservatives" when they are nothing of the sort.

Rush Limbaugh, who wanted Sandra Fluke to post videos of herself having sex fears for America's girls because of this video?? The right truly has no sense of humor. Of course they miss that the Obama campaign didn't make this video. Fox News is a bunch of fear mongers. But they are funny.

Replies

Doesn't matter who made it - it sows an overall atitude of the dem party thinking woman are just about theri lady parts and too stupid to suceed on their own w/out help from Obama. See Julia

And again, do you have any backing for that at all?

Of course you were quick to agree the woman who made it was homely.  Does that invalidate her having lady parts?

I haven't seen the video. It sounds ridiculous. But there is room for diversity of opinion in the party. There's a lot I don't like but I like the fact that things are not censored.

Chill out folkS!! with all the garbage that's out there for political ads (those of us living in NH are especially assaulted) Lena's made me laugh. Cheers to her for her creativity and, if it works, all the better.

you also have to love the new moveon.org ad produced by Moore which is just vile. Keeping it classsy

Here's the source material for begolfings post.  Gotta love it.

I guess you need to run ads like these, Julia, Big Bird when you have nothing else

Replies

@beglofing: What exactly is your issue with the Julia ad?  Quick, in your own words.

@everyone else: Here's a fun game.  Pick one of  begolfing's posts at random and Google it.  You will invevitably get an almost word for word hit at Breitbart or the Free Republic.

My only guess is, they don't have anything else.

ESF - i stated it below. Not a fan of the thinking that governemnt is there to run your wole life. BTW, have you ever posted anyting factual? And your haterd toward Breitbart? Let me guess, you prefer Maddow

If you can consider voting for a piece of crap like Romney certainly the joke is on you.

I have to say something about Breitbart.  Now there is a guy who likes to take what he calls a conservative position yet the truth is he's nothing but a rumor monger who wouldn't know a fact if it bit him.  I'd love for some of you folks who simply attack the Pres. or government to just once express an idea that was indeed "conservative".  All I see are insults and crazy internet junk.  Some posters simply seem to have a "hate" issue with the President.  Tell me something "conservative" Romney is for.  Don't tell me "small" government as that is not necessarily "conservative".  The fact is a number of posters do nothing except make these wild accusations, Breitbart like conspiracy junk and have nothing of intelligence to say.

I cut my teeth on Goldwater's campaign and he woldn't share a drink with most of the clowns who post and say they are conservative.

Replies

Have to agree there. My immediate issue is the amount of unattributed cutting and pasting BeGolfing does, but yes, Breitbart.com has a lower standard for truth than even the Free Republic.  If it's hateful towards "liberals" or the President, they'll put it on the site.  And BeGolfing will repost it.

esf - you are so lost it is funny. Again, you attack the source becuase you do not like the narrative. I am voting Romney becuase Obama failed. Period. We need a change. Failed. Failure. Fail.

The American Taliban Otherwise known as the republican party is upset a woman makes references about sex and politics? How dare she - back to the kitchen with you its almost 5pm! You should be making dinner not expressing you thoughts or creativity!

ESF - OT question. Do I remember correctly that you are in IT? You might not be able to help but when i g on Boston.com on my home PC it starts revving like crazy. I downloaded Process Center (think that;s the naame) and it shows one .exe going kinda crazy. Researched but it seems I need it. Is it just adobe or another file that is causing it to act crazy?

Replies

What .exe is going crazy?  And which browser?

I would like an answer to a question that Jacoby and others have posed to O supporters. Considering he did not roll back Bush policies, and in some cases expanded them, why would you still vote for him? Even well know liberals are turning becuase of this.

Replies

I can't answer that because I do not support either Romney or Obama. However, I am curious about something. Since you are voting for Romney, or at least, against Obama, and since, if polls are to be believed, we stand a 51% chance of a Romney re-election campaign in 2016, will you vote against him when he proves himself to be just as much a failure? Also, why claim to be independent when you are as unquestioningly supportive of Republicans as you are? Are you too poor or too cheap to make campaign contributions to the Party? I don't care one way or the other, but I am curious all the same.

You are having trouble understanding how liberals think? It's not them, it's you. You focus on the minutea looking for a wedge issue, and totally miss the larger picture: the GOP doesn't represent my interests or those of the vast majority of Americans. BTW - Please name one or two of those "well know liberals [who] are turning becuase of this."

The Tolerant left posts here. Just a typical sample:

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/10/30/Heroes-NYU-Nurses-First-Responders-Save-Newborns-Critical-Care-Patients-After-Power-Generators-Fail-At-Hospital

When emergency back-up generators at New York University Langone Medical Center-Tisch Hospital failed Monday night during Hurricane Sandy, nurses and first responders improvised. These heroes used their instincts, and relied on training exercises to dramatically save the lives over 200 patients, 20 whom were babies in the hospital's neonatal unit and 45 of whom were patients in critical condition. Some were on battery-operated respirators.
