An artist who hangs on too long may look ludicrous, but causes no harm beyond the waste of time and money for audiences who choose to attend their performanses, or buy their books or records.
A politician, (or a CEO of a company, or a physician or lawyer), who hangs on too long will cause harm to all who need their services, not just those who helped keep them in office.
Maybe Menino needs the money. Where else could a 70 year old in bad health earn over $100,000 a year? No matter, I think its time for a new mayor at the end of this term. I hope he doesn't leave office because I think Steve Murphy is a buffoon but there should be a clean slate when this term is over. Boston has a lot of good people and its time for Menino to give someone else a chance.

If Mariano Rivera starts serving up meatballs, he'll still be the greatest closer ever. And if Tom Menino hasn't made a good recovery a couple of months from now, he'll still have plenty of time to make the right decision.
Yeah, but Mick Jagger sang "Time is on My Side", and he may have been 100% correct about that!
Sir Mick Jagger, that is.
