Joan Vennochi

Weld is not the GOP’s best bet

For all the hypocrisy he brings to the table when it comes to prosecutorial excess, Bill Weld said what a lot of Massachusetts movers and shakers were thinking.

Tim Cahill’s crime was politics as usual, Weld told the Boston Herald in a recent interview; pursuing the former state treasurer on political corruption charges was a mistake on the part of Attorney General Martha Coakley, the former governor said.

As much as some like to believe that Massachusetts is CRAZY liberal we want a check on the Democrats.  The problem is that the NATIONAL Republicans are indeed crazy and they never compromise.  Weld would be good if he ran as an Independent.  He could then caucus with the Republicans but tell them to stop using the fillibuster as their own personal middle finger to Obama.  Weld would be good because he could tell Mitch McConnel where to go if needed.  And the Herald would never use the granny/grampa line on a dude.

Joan's venom against Mitt Romney has a new target: Bill Weld. Weld was a popular governor, and a good one. He was effective as a Republican governor in a deep blue state. But Joan has a tendency to despise all Republicans, and she has no credibility as a result. Isn't it amazing that her biggest complaint about Weld is his work as a US attorney against Kevin White? But she never seemed to be bothered by the real crimes of the Democrats from Mass, from Ted Kennedy to Barney Frank.

Every point she made about him is accurate and factual.  He had a lousy work ethic, one could say an absent work ethic and had no problem about running for re-election and then deciding he didn't want to be here to do the work.  That's your idea of a good governor?

You live in Virginia.  But we get it: you hate Massachusetts so you left it, you hate the Globe but you read it and its progressive columnists, we're all fools here in the Bay State. Perhaps you should focus on Virginia instead of the greatest state in the union. BTW, Governor Weld had tremendous potential to be a great governor, but he was lazy and disengaged. He was not a "good governor", he checked out in mid-stream. Just like that other rich man's son.

Never mind the GOP he is not Massachusetts's best choice. Mr. Playboy and ho hum administrator is not a fit for these times. We do not need another patrician governor who does not understand the role of government in alleviating human suffering when the private sector turns its back on it fellow taxpayers, customers, and citizens.

Betsy Warren wasn't called "Granny" by the Boston Herald's Howie Carr because of her age, as Mr. Carr has grown weary of explaining.  He called her "Granny" because he thinks that she resembles Irene Ryan, who played Granny Clampett on "The Beverly Hillbillies".   Personally I think she looks more like Howdy Doody except she doesn't have freckles.

Howie Carr is a fine one to be commenting on a woman's looks.  You and he should look in the mirror before you pass judgement on someone else looks.

Brown proved that good looks don't make a model Senator.  What legacy is he leaving?

No matter how you slice it, calling Warren "Granny" and "Liawatha" and all the other derogatory terms ended up hurting the Brown campaign.  Likability was one of Brown's biggest assets.

And gosh, poor mis-understood Howie.  What has he done to deserve such nastiness?  Oh, wait.

He endorsed Mitt? What else is there to say. That speaks volumes about how much he cares about the working class of this state. Stay hidden Bill

Excellent analysis.  I wonder why Weld has returned to Massachusetts after abandoning the office he was elected to in 1997 and his marriage. Things in NY started to bore him?  I give no importance to any of his comments and view his support of Romney as a tactic to get some appointment should R have won.

Well said.

I don't usually like Howie's nicknames (exception: JoeJoeJoe Kennedy) but this one was innocuous, as noted above. I think Bill Weld is the same age as Hillary; wonder if Joan thinks that's a "generational problem"? I'll bet you'll find that all Weld did is return to Massachusetts, his family's home turf, and the media started calling on him. Which is the point of supporting his becoming a fiscal-conservative, social-liberal face of the MA Republican Party, if it's smart. Watch liberals show fear (eg this column).

If you don't recognize the profound differences between Governor Weld and Senator/Secretary Clinton, then there's not much I can say to help you out on that score. It is informative to know how familiar that you are with Mr Carr's body of "work". BTW, who does Mr Carr think that you resemble?

Howie Carr resembles Jethro, the dim-witted moron character in the Beverly Hillbillies. Howie earns his living doing nothing while carrying out character assassinations. Jethro earned his keep doing something while doing nothing.

Replies

I don't see the resemblance. Howie makes a pretty good living while Jethro depended on the family luck-wealth.

Also: some character needs to be assassinated.

probably a weaker candidate for the Republicans than Scott (pretty boy) Brown, therefore I hope Weld runs and the Democrats can come up with a strong candidate.  Not Martha please nor the guy from Somerville, someone credible.

Anyone with half a brain would never take advice from a biased, plaguiarizing, parasite like Vennochi.  Speaking of hypocrites, ha.

plaguiarizing???? I guess that we've heard from the folks with half a brain.

Also, no comma is required between "plaguiarizing" and parasite. Sorry! I suspect that you were out that day.
