Act on marriage

When boozed-up pop star Britney Spears married Jason Allen Alexander in Las Vegas several years ago, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts acknowledged the validity of their union — all 55 hours of it. It may have been an ill-advised and ill-considered act of stupidity — a fraud, in fact — but if Nevada said it was OK, that was good enough for the Bay State.

On the other hand, if a married same-sex couple from Boston were to travel to Nevada, their marriage — no matter how soberly entered into, no matter its length or commitment — would be unrecognized. What is good enough for Massachusetts is not good enough for Nevada.

"A solid majority of Americans support the idea..." Uh, can you back that up please?

Numerous polls going back over 2 years back this up. Google it.

Ahh, polls. Of course. What people forget is that polls on this issue have historically overstated support for it. It doesnt take much logic to see that if "a solid majority" of Americans supported it, it would have gotten more than 52% of the vote in MD, or 53% in Maine, or 50% in Minnesota, 3 of the more liberal states in the country. I just would appreciate more truthful reporting by this columnist and the rest of the media on same sex marriage.

How about you're married in Massachusetts but if you go to Nevada you're not?  It'd give "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" a whole new meaning.
