‘Benghazi Show’ jumps the shark

I’m not a Jerry Springer fan, but once his show is on, it can be hard to look away. I felt the same, back in October, when I tuned into a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Benghazi. It had high drama: A stiff State Department official described his requests for additional security in the months leading up to the attack on the US consulate in Libya. When his grim-faced boss, seated next to him, retorted that the consulate had the “correct” number of armed guards, you could almost hear the audience mutter: “Oh no, she didn’t just say that.” I watched all 3 hours, 12 minutes, and 59 seconds of it.

In the weeks that followed, I checked in on the news of the House and Senate intelligence committee Benghazi hearings. But the plot didn’t really thicken. There were no big revelations. Nobody said or did anything surprising or new. So, I must confess, I skipped the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, “Benghazi and Beyond.” And I’m probably going to miss the next episode: the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s “Benghazi: the Attack and Lessons learned.”

No Farah, I guess the murders of four americans by terrorists isn't a big problem, especially when a democrat is in the white House, terrible article.

She called it tragic and senseless. Her complaint is with that old fool McCain. And it's not an article; it's an editorial, by the way. It appears you didn't take the time to think about her main point.

And the lefts constant harangue over Valerie Plame wasn't?

Were there endless hearings on the Valerie Plame affair?  Did Congress "get to the bottom of it"?

I completely agree. I think that what this was all about was getting rid of Susan Rice by creating a fake political storm. John McCain should resign in disgrace. Republican who followed his lead should be ashamed. So should the media that took the controversy at face value, allowing themselves to be scammed because it provided headlines.

Editors! What a cliched headline.

Cliched headline? How many people even know what "jumped the shark" means? I can guarantee you that headline has never been published before. Ever.

It is shocking that a Globe cheerleader for the left would be so annoyed at congress pursuing its oversight role in this matter.  Susan Rice was sent on fool's errand by the White House, in the midst of a campaign.  That alone deserves all the scrutiny it is receiveing.  The security lapse in Benghazi raises untold questions about our diplomatic efforts-and there should be people who are punished for their mistakes.  But not to this cheerleader.  She believes Kerry is qualified to secretary of state, and just wants to move forward with his next move.  This is not journalism, it is political advocacy.

Clinton did not put boots on the ground in Iraq. As I remember, the UN inspector repeatedly confirmed no WMD's. Plus the whole Plame affair. Bush and staff had a definite itch to finish WH Bush's war, irregardless of any evidence to the contrary. This has been gone over many times.

OK, first you're for Iraq, now against it, all in the same thread.

why are scandals on the left swept under the rug so easily?

Replies

For the same reason the scandals on the right are so easily swept under the rug. It must surely be a rather lumpy rug by now. The fact that Congress is still investigating suggests to me that it is not being swept anywhere at all.

the msm sweeps scandals on the right under the rug?

" it was odd that the administration’s spokesperson on the issue, UN ambassador Susan Rice, told talk shows that the attack was believed to be the work of spontaneous demonstrators rather than terrorists.". Odd? Wasn't it "odd" that the UN ambassador was trotted out to be the spokesperson in the first place? Why not Clinton? She was in charge of this department, no? Why did Carney, Clinton AND Obama "cling" to the "video did it" story for weeks when, as Obama claimed in his debate that he called it terrorism the very first day (which of course, he didn't, he merely made a general comment on terrorism AFTER his statement blaming the video). And to suggest this has "jumped the shark" when the story has barely seen the pages of the Globe and most other major media outlets is so preposterous a suggestion that the author has to be either delusional or completely in the protection business for the administration. Benghazi has been ignored by the media from day one despite the relentless and transparent peddling of the ridiculous, the "video did it" story which now isn't even remotely considered legitimate. Rice was either a dupe or a happy conspirator and her performance back in the Rwanda genocide (where she refused to call it "genocide" for utterly political reasons) points directly to her willingness to put politics ahead of reality. First ignore lying and then claim it was "overblown" before anyone directly involved has testified to congress (most notably Clinton herself)......this is joke that even the Globe should be ashamed printing.

Just the way the Bush Administration (orchestrated by Cheney) "trotted out" Colin Powell to unsuspectingly spout the lies that the Cheney insiders knew were lies.  So, if Susan Rice was "trotted out", as you say, it would hardly be the first time that that happened, in less than ten years at that.

Hardly jumping the shark! How disrespectful to the families of the deceased! If this were a Republican administration we would not hear the end of it despite your claims to the contrary. All is being hushed up because an Iran-Contra type operation was being carried out and the unthinkable happened on Hillary's watch. They let Rice take the fall so as not to taint Hillary with anything that might haunt her campaign efforts in 2016.

Shhh !!!

"Those of you who are still tuned in to the Benghazi show should ask yourselves: Is Benghazi really our nation’s biggest problem? What are the chances that we will see four different congressional committees hold hearings on the senseless shooting of 20 first graders in Newtown, Conn.?" I don't see the Hyena and others commenting much on this, the single most important paragraph in the story.

I think it should be noted that not many outlets wait for the dust to settle after a conspicuous event.  Everyone wants to be the  first.  "In a story you'll only see on W..."  ".....a story first reported here on W..."  It's a rush for one-upsmanship, to separate them from the pack, to get people to watch/listen to them, to saitisfy some ego-driven and maybe altruistic need, these outlets report rumor and opinion as fact.  Benghazi isn't much different from Newtown and The System Worked isn't much different from other "gotcha'"  posters who would politicize cotton-candy if it were possible.

Just so I'm clear: is Mayor Bloomberg a "Liberal" or a "Democrat?" Becuase he was the one who banned super-sized soda.  Mass. did not.

I love that you consider yourself a "Normal American."  Are you familiar with the term "hubris?"

Glad I missed today's nonsensical debate.  The logic twisters were out in full force.

A certain contributer appears to be off his meds again. I can't believe the Globe let him come back.

Sarah,

How embarassing! The Benghazi report comes out and three senior State department officials LOSE THEIR JOBS! I guess your  "no news here, just move on..." perspective about this story clearly missed something, and something pretty big.

Seriously Sarah, if you are going to write for a well known media outlet like the Globe, you just gotta get a little more on the ball in terms of knowing the facts of the matter at hand. This article reminds me of your pieice on Obama empty-suit deficit plan.  "..Several people told me..." doesn't cut it in the big time...you need to get well informed!

I'm lookin' out for you here!
