JULIETTE KAYYEM

The real plight of the orphan-hostages

There are people who are mean — simply heartless and cruel — because they enjoy it. Some lash out because of group dynamics and clique behavior. Others may be cold because of a broken heart or a long-ago slight.

Then there is Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is cruelly using orphans to thwart the cause of human rights.

Let's not forget that Juliette Kayyem was part of the Obama administration. So how is that "Reset" working out with Russia ?

Obama is president. Get over it and give it a rest.

So the Globe runs a disclaimer below ever John Sununu column - but not under  Juliette Kayyem's columns.  But she's a democrat - so it's alright.

There are problems with Americans adopting children from other cultures and places. They will never see their families again. Also we don't get to tell Russia what to do. Part of the problem with the US is our snarky attitude that we know better than everyone else and have a right to tell them what to do.

sabagup:  First, the Russian children are orphans; they have no family.  Second, please spare us the political correctness and anti-American bias.  No rational, compassionate human being would side with someone like Putin who uses innocent children as pawns.  In this case, we DO know better.  It is FACT, not opinion, that these children would be better off in the U.S., raised by loving families, than in Russian institutions.  (Have you ever spoken with a U.S. family who has adopted a Russian child?  Ask those folks to describe the orphanages; you will be moved to tears.)

And what precisely are the problems with Americans' adopting children from other cultures and places?

Countries routinely re-evaluate their positions on international adoption. It is always difficult for families in process but the agencies understand the risks. Putin has the right to take his action even if the reason is transparent. The question will be whether other governments stand up or back down.

It is not people with hearts pitted against one another. It is international relations.
