Appointment by appointment, face by face, Governor Deval Patrick is giving Massachusetts a more modern and diverse look.
His choice of William “Mo” Cowan, his former chief of staff, to serve as the state’s interim US senator drives home the trend. Bay State government is starting to look a bit more like Patrick, the first black governor of the state.

You know equality has arrived when persons of color and gender can make the same kind of quality patronage appointments as old white guys
Let's look at the Editorials across the board today - Joan, good job! Joanna, clearly read the memo - good job! Yvonne, please pay more attention to the message traffic - we wanted three editorials across the front page to bill board the genius that is Deval patrick.

In a 6 mos term, the people of mass don't have the luxury of having someone represent mass w a fresh perspective! We neesee someone who knows how to work the system in this brief period to possibly better our state. We ave absolutely NO political clout in the senate.
Joan, just curious, how is that "more modern and diverse look" thing you reference working out at the Globe senior management level? After all, you folks see yourselves as the "progressive" paper, no?

Amen. Listening to the Globe lecture on diversity is like listening to Ali ibn Ghouri (formerly know as Al Gore) lecture on saving energy.
Looks like the governor’s press aids have been hard at work this week…So much for the “hope and change” theme the governor initially ran on. At the end of the day Patrick is like all the governor’s that came before him; a patronage czar. This column is a weak attempt to justify his actions as something else.
Deval's affirmative action mentality has no place in state government.
Failure after failure at the drug lab, pharmacy oversight, welfare department, DHS, MBTA ... and we applaud hiring for reasons other than capabilities? 2013 and racism lives with the nice name of affirmative action, but it's still racism, sponsored by the state and paid for by the taxpayer.

White males need not apply. This means you too, Barney. What, you thought being gay would jump you ahead of a brother?
Another Democrat, Bob Menendez would NEVER discriminate based on age.
Anyone here know what I'm talking about? Globe readers, have other sources ?
While most men would probably think that $500 was a very reasonable price to pay to have sex with a sixteen year old Dominican prostitute, Sen. Menendez apparently was only willing to pay $100. Like most Democrats, he likes spending money except when it's his, then he throws nickles around they were manhole covers.
Uh ... I'm hoping most men don't think about it at all, and if they do they certainly don't act on it.
Joan says "it's up to these appointments to prove themselves." Shouldn't they have proved themselves before they were appointed?
Everyone who posted a comment on this thread should go to www.helenbousquet.com to see what Steward Health Care System put this poor woman through. Actor Tom Hanks introduces her website. They left this woman in an UNMONITORED recovery room knowing she had sleep apnea while dosed out on morphine and the woman choked to death. This hospital is owned by the same company, Cerberus Capital, who owns the gun manufacturing company that made the gun used in Newtown. All they care about is money, not patient care. The own the guns, the hospitals, and now the food (they just bought Shaws supermarkets). This is what our world has come to. Deval Patrick had a fundraiser held by Steward CEO Ralph De La Torre, then appointed a Steward Exec as health secretary. Our AG was in attendance, who then approved their takeover of our hospitals.
Joanie babe. . . How come your hero, Deeval the DeVille Magnificent hasn't named any Albanians or Khmers or Japanese or Zunis or South Pacific islanders to any of these oh, so important hackdoms you are so proud of for deeval? Diversity? The 'R' word comes to mind when one considers most of Deeval's most often hyped choices. Some of the folks are probably quite good at what they do, like Mo Cowan. But they are also letting themselves become indebted to the self-promoting midget of governors, the guy with huge pipedreams, indifference to his constituents and wishes for his own glorification. I wish Mo all the luck in the world during his few months being called "Senator", but I don't envy him deciding whether to vote on bills that might play a role in the future of Hanscomb AFB and Army Corps of Engineer projects around Taxawhooshetts.
I feel like I've entered an alternate universe when I read the Globe's opinions on Patrick as a governor, in "every phase of the game," as someone who pretty much *does* know what he's doing is fond of saying.
