Time will reveal the true Scott Brown. He is in no way a "leader" and would make a terrible govenor. He is like a flag - with him you can't predict what the weather will be but you can certainly tell which way the wind is blowing at the moment.
Brown is a follower not a leader from what I've seen. he'll probably be elected governor and spend 4 years whining that he's reaching across the aisle and nothing's getting done. Though I look forward to not voting for Scott Brown in another election

This smarmy little hit on Scott Brown just proves that Joan is not a serious commentator. She dislikes people who happen to belong to the Republican Party, and seeks silly little nothings to attack them with. Has Joan EVER done a piece like this on a Barney Frank or Ted Kennedy? Clearly, their behavior was at times far worse than anything ascribed to Scott Brown. But Joan is just a Globe Cheerleader, which means making smarmy attacks on people like Brown.
I'm not sure I understand how urging someone to tell the truth is a "smarmy little hit"?
Barney Frank can Tweet about whatever he wants and, at this point, who would care? Kennedy is of course, dead. The comment about the "pocket Tweet" is just dumb because it doesn't sound true. It sounds like the made-up excuse from a seventh grader. Any person who knows anything about how technology works knows that Twitter doesn't just open by itself and answer a question in the exact spot with a misspelled word. It's impossible. It would never happen that way and it never could. Brown is telling a lie for the simple reason that he can't think of anything else to say. It's embarrassing to watch and insulting to contemplate.
If Scott was a Democrat this would have been a one day story. If this is what Joan can do on her own she'd be better off going back to plagiarizing boilerplate from Todd Domke.
And you would be calling him a liar

Another Globe columnist soon to be looking for work.
I love the troll tatic. Divert the the truth by trying to blame the Globe or Globe columinst. Yet you continue to read the Globe????

Scott Brown is a lying SOB and has been for some time. He's done so well that the network that 60 percent of Americans believes lies to them has hired him. You do the math.
Just like Warren
Warren won the election. Not Brown.
Wow. This is what you have come up with for an editorial? Really??? This is a joke. Even worse than writing it - who allowed this article to make it to print?
And yet, you read it (well, maybe), and took the time to comment.
....and mislabeled the column as an editorial as well!
Who allowed this article to make it to print? The Boston Globe editorial staff. The same people who write editorials that officially represent the views of the paper read this column by a columnist with her own opinion and printed it.
PaddyR74, if you don't fundamentally understand that simple sentence, you really shouldn't be critiquing professional journalism.
Scott Brown is only interested in Scott Brown, Inc. Being a US Senator for a couple of years was probably the hightest paying job he ever had. He's now tasted the good life, and wants more. And absolutely nothing wrong with that. Clearly, he is following in the illustrious footsteps of Sarah Palin. Cash in on political celebrity quickly, keep toying with the idea of running for Govenor in order to keep your name in circulation, grab as much from Fox News as possible, then fade away.
Yes, Palin is still fading away, but not fast enough for me.
I absolutely agree with this. Comparing him to Palin is perfect - obscure politician becomes nationally known. I know people who know Scott through the military and as friends and always hear that he's a really good guy. That said, his delusional name-dropping and weak explantion for a tweet cause credibility issues for him. As you say, better for him to cash in on his current fame than run for office and have to explain himself.
Scott Brown thinking of runnning for Governor of our state is a big JOKE. He is in no way capable. As previously stated he goes which ever way the wind blows. He would be the perfect rainmaker for some law firm because he could schmooz with potential customers and never have to put too much effort into using a thought process. Being a FOX commmentator is also where he belongs--he will be told what to say that denigrates anything that the President does or says and then he can feel good about himself. Scott, please do not embarrass the electoral process again in MA by running for governor.
Tweeting? Pols will now be held accountalbe for their "tweets". I'm not a big fan of Brown and I realize the piece is about his credibility in general, but use "tweets" as a pivot point. I can hear it now at some confirmation hearing for a cabinet post, "In 2013 did you tweet Iranians love their mullahs." Or did you tweet, "I like sex on a beach from a bar." Tweets?
Tweets are silly little postings by folks who think other folks care if they are on the toilet or getting ready to play football. Tweets? No, tweet reviews are not journalism. Brown is a clutz politically but he no more than anyone else desrves a hit for stupid tweets. After all, all tweets are stupid.
This isn't about the tweet, but about his explanation of it. He could've said, "I misspelled a word, so what?" Instead he pitches this technically-impossible excuse. The inability to take responsibility for his actions speaks volumes.
Attaturk I agree with all your points accept the main one: that editorials about Scott Browns tweets are not worthy of an editorial or opinion column. I agree that tweeting itself is silly, but many serious public figures tweet theses days, so the fact that he tweeted is not notewothy. However, the facts that he got into a tweet tit-for-tat with strangers and that he told a silly fib on TV to try to hide his silliness shows that he is not a serious public figure. This could be important to point out to potential voters who still haven't yet figured out that Mr. Brown is a bit of a dolt, can't be trusted to tell the truth, and will never be an effective leader.
Joan, I expect more articles coming about scott Brown, after all, you wouldn't want to write about an issue that's important to the tax payer, you know Joan, welfare fraud or all the corruption in this state, no never.
Maybe we should push for Capuano to run, he's a member of the Socialist Party of Mass, he'd be perfect.
bqhatevwr
wow, 23 dislikes, why should I be surprised!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone actually believe that after he tweeted "whatever" his pocket then replied with "bqhatevwr"? It more than strains credulity. Scott Brown has a lying problem. Clearly from these comments people still like him and are willing to pretend like his lies don't matter. Scott, if you can't admit you made a stupid mistake on something silly and irrelevant and have to blatantly lie to cover it up, how do you expect us to trust you in any elected position where you are actually dealing with stuff that's important?
Brown is basically talking to the percentage of his supporters who are not very computer literate. "Oh, yeah, 'pocket tweets', I've heard of them. I think it's like 'catfishing', right?"
He started out okay with Stephanos in the interview, explaining that that night his daughter Ayla had been showing him how to use Twitter and related sites; he should have left it there. But, as usual, he couldn't shut up, he couldn't stop himself, and he wandered into an improbable explanation, with the addition that his Tweet had "trended worldwide". Hey, maybe it's because he had a difficult upbringing, but Brown's "trend" to the grandiose and puffing himself up is troubling.

If this was his first lie, I would agree it is silly. It isn't, he just makes things up and expects people to believe him because, well he's Scott Brown. What has this guy ever accomplished?
We've all fat-fingered text on our phones - and that's all Brown really needed to say about that tweet. Launching into an improbable story will just keep it alive, and in this case the "any press is good press" thing may not apply.
More serious is his continuing penchant for saying things that just aren't true. I watched his Fox debut, and he reiterated his claim that he wrote the STOCK Act bill that was signed into law. Of course, it was really Joe Lieberman's bill that became law - Brown's didn't make it out of committee. And this from a guy that claimed to read every bill before voting on it.
I suspect his Fox job comes with a great paycheck, but will also provide reams of material for anyone running against him for governor, even from his own party. If nothing else, it gives him time to write his 2nd book - perhaps one discussing his thoughts on the great political thinkers of history (a la Palin's 2nd book).
Eh. This is petty. Old news. I'd rather the rest of the country see this as the topical Scott Brown story. Here, in Massachusetts, where he lives, where everyone he knows lives, we should be able to have better columns about him.
The entire premise of this article would be considered comical if it weren't so sad. In a state where convicted felons can get re-elected, where if your last name begins with a certain letter and ends with a certain letter the rest of your “credibility” doesn’t matter, where you can blatantly lie about your heritage to get a step up and be elected, we contemplate a random tweet and talk seriously about “credibility” with regard to whom we elect. This state and in particular this news paper and even more in particular this journalist, have long ago lost their credibility to talk about credibility.
Agreed...and a journalist who was suspended for "use of materal without attribution" represents the height of hypocrisy re: credibility....."whatever."
bqhatevwr
Please stop with the "she never put it to rest." Stop.
she didnt
Joan: in Massachusetts, honesty is not compatable with politics. Just consider the number of politicos either charged or in prison for corruption. I’ll leave party affiliation to you.
Good point but I would go outside of Massachusetts and call it a trait of most politicians.
But it's worse in Massachusetts than almost anywhere else except, possibly, Illinois, which is also a state dominated by Democrats.
Although Iwould not give SB a glass of water if he was on fire, this article is pathetic. Who cares about a dumbtweet weeks or months ago. Real substance to this article, not! The only thing that matters re: the SB "brand" is his voting record in 'MA and US representatives. Tis article is more damaging to the JV brand then that
It's not about the tweet. It's about his honesty problem. The tweet is just one of the many pieces of evidence that suggest Brown has a problem with the truth.
Want to talk about substance--who cares about Warrens Indian heritage?? All of the accusations(press) she was a liar Brown supporters did come to the Globe forums and attack the Globe for stories for that--did they???
Meanwhile in real news the Globe will ignore and spin: U.S. stock index futures continued to retreat on Thursday, following a bigger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims.
We are in a recovery, debt is just word, math is not a science, we are adding jobs, we don't have a spending problem, if only we had more "revenues", $16T and climbing, Growth reduction = devestating cuts, spending = investing, revenues = taxes, fareness = whatever gets me more "revenues", success = averace", don't worry begofling...all is "well"
Try staying on the subject. But you can't because you have no counter answer. Why-- because Joan is right.

Scott Brown was a senator. Check
Scott Brown is likely to run for governor. Check
Scott Brown had a reputation as being a "nice guy" which helped him with democrates. Check.
Scott Brown showed an uglier side when he realized Warren was a legitimate threat, damaging his brand. Check.
Scott Brown somehow releases petulant and ungrammatical tweets and devises a comically improbable justification for them. Check.
Because this column concerns the character and truthfulness of a man who has a good shot at being our next governor, it strikes me as highly relevant. Character counts. The ad hominem attacks on the writer, or the assertion that she is some kind of liberal assassin strike me as a childishly partisan denial of facts. Or trolling.
Fortunately, most of the odd comments I see in the Globe are probably generated by a dozen or so ideological zealots who do not and cannot be representative of Massachusetts in general. We are, as New Englanders, too common sensical and logical for such blind allegiance to any party or club.
Well said!!!!

The larger point is that the more we get to know Scott Brown, the less there is to "know". He's probably a nice man. I say "probably" because I don't actually know him. But he has always come across as a guy you would probably be happy to have as your next door neighbor. But a United States Senator? The Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts? This is just not a guy who has given lots of serious thought and study to the problems the country faces as the 21st century unfolds. Look folks, try to put your agendas aside for the moment. Just imagine for a moment being in a room alone with Scott Brown, and asking him for his analysis of the dynamics of the civil war in Syria and how it affects the United States' interests in the Middle East. Ask him precisely how the Keystone pipeline will either help, detract, or do essentially nothing to address America's energy needs. Ask him to expound for however long it takes on how exactly we should balance tax policy and entitlement policy so we inject some basic fairness into the former and restore fiscal prudence to the latter. Ask him how health care in the most affluent nation on earth can be made more accessible and affordable to the greatest number of our fellow citizens. Ask him what the most realistic, common sense reform to our immigratiion system should look like. I think you'd get either a series of blank stares, or some fairly vague, shopworn, GOP-issued boilerplate. This guy is not an intellectual heavyweight. He's a part-time State Senator from Wrentham and a part-time conveyancing attorney who caught lightning in a bottle in a once-in-a-lifetime confluence of circumstances, and then found himself deeply in over his head as a national celebrity, for reasons I am sure he still can't quite comprehend. We really need to stop taking this guy even remotely seriously. Let him make some money on FoxNews, tossing off scripted "answers" and "analysis" to underhanded, slow-pitch softball "questions" from the likes of Hannity and Van Sustern, and then please just stop pretending that he's a . . . . statesman.
This is a well reasoned and written Comment. No name calling, off topic ranting or acrimonious tone is displayed within. Whether right, middle or left, a moderately lengthy analysis is always welcome. Thank you.
Preach it, jegan! This is exactly correct.
