Those who worked with Gina McCarthy in New England have no doubt she is the right woman to run the Environmental Protection Agency. The outstanding question is whether President Obama, who nominated her this week, will have her back if she is confirmed.
“She swears like a longshoreman with a Kennedy accent,” said Doug Foy, who was secretary of commonwealth development under Governor Mitt Romney. McCarthy was his deputy secretary for the environment. “We had utility companies running old dirty power plants, and Gina called them out. But she’d do it in a humorous way, like, ‘We know you’re trying to ignore us.’ ”

She seems ideal. Even Republicans like her!
I have never understood the obsession environmentalists have with power plants. My guess is that they are the last remaining industrial facilities with smokestacks. To an environmentalist a smokestack is the most evil thing imaginable. Actually most modern power plants don't have smokestacks that pour out clouds of unfiltered smoke, they have cooling towers that emit heat that is only visible on frigid days when it appears as steam. So why does a power plant even need a smokestack or cooling tower? It is because the most tried and true, efficient, cost effective and reliable method of generating the massive amounts of electricity that a modern society depends on starts with the basic act of boiling water. Water is boiled to make steam which is fed into steam turbines coupled to electrical generators which produce the juice and send it out over the wires to your home. In order to boil the water you need to burn something. That's the part environmentalists don't like. Of course they are willing to make exceptions in their own homes so they can have heat, hot shower water and hot water for their coffee and tea. At any rate, there aren't that many power plants to begin with. They are actually few and far between which further illustrates just how efficient they are in producing enormous amounts of elctricity to power wide swaths of the country.
Baloney. The Midwest is chock full of 700 to 1,000 foot tall stacks on power plants and other industrial buildings that transmit their filth directly into the jetstream. These plants raised their stacks in the 1970s after the passage of the Clean Air Act because they were failing air quality tests set up around the plants. Almost half of the mecury deposition polluting rivers and lakes in the Northeast is from these sources. http://www.clf.org/newsroom/northeast-states-move-to-force-reduction-of-mercury-pollution-from-midwest-power-plants/

"" "Environmentalists believe that if Obama supports McCarthy, significant progress can be made on pollution standards for existing power plants, new ozone rules, and cleaner transportation fuels." They also believe that she will NEVER approve the Keystone Oil Pipeline from Canada, with its thousands of new union jobs. Apparently Derrick doesn't believe in Middle Class job creation.

Less than a hundred permanent jobs will be created from the pipeline, it has a very real danger of permanently destroying the water table that feeds our most prolific farmlands, and it will cause the price of gasoline to go up.
thank goodness global warming is here or we would have gotten more snow yesterday

Global warming causes freakishly high precipitation, whether rain or snow. The whole reason the large snowfall was unexpected was because it didn't fit with the norm, we were very far away from the center of the storm. That's caused by global warming.
and back to reality: http://www.redstate.com/2013/03/08/climate-change-cools-off/
Did you read that article? hoy. It's based on the recent NY Times article that says:
"Even if the temperature increase from human activity that is projected for later this century comes out on the low end of estimates, scientists said, the planet will be at least as warm as it was during the warmest periods of the modern geological era, known as the Holocene, and probably warmer than that."
"Scientists say that if natural factors were still governing the climate, the Northern Hemisphere would probably be destined to freeze over again in several thousand years. “We were on this downward slope, presumably going back toward another ice age,” Dr. Marcott said.
Instead, scientists believe the enormous increase in greenhouse gases caused by industrialization will almost certainly prevent that."
You would think after the last election results that redstate would be the LAST place anyone would go for reality.
Obama with his final 4 years in Washington hires Gina McCarthy, Governor Mitt Romney's deputy secretary for the environment_you gotta love the irony of his hire!
