In Holyoke, worry about student program cuts

Word is that, outside of Washington, D.C., most people haven’t noticed sequestration. Airplanes are still taking off and landing, “Dancing With the Stars” is starting up, and most of our lives haven’t noticeably changed. This leaves the politicians free to go on resolving nothing while they try to score points on cable TV.

But in Holyoke, Lyn Horan is worried.

I don't know about programs like this.  I'm not convinced.  First of all students with this profile probably already are eligible for many different kinds of government programs meant to provide access for poor and\or minority students. This (upward bound) doesn't sound to me like a program that is providing "access" (an overused term) but more like something primarily deigned to develop interests which should have happened in high school but probably didn't because of our obsession with bubble-test scores.

This is all you've got?  Really?  If this is the bad of the sequester, bring it on.  As sob stories go, this is pretty lame.  It's not like Grandma's iron lung being reposessed.  I haven't given Holyoke a single thought since I graduated from UMass and saw my last Railroad Salvage ad on my fuzzy black and white TV in 1976.  Ruby and Choo Choo, rest in peace.  I don't care about Holyoke and I don't care about art therapy for at risk youth in Holyoke.  The more I look at the sequester, the more I like what I see.

strange but we have programs like the multi million dollar government grant to find out why the majority of lesbians are over weight, or millions to train the people of morocco on how to build and produce potery.. and the dummies in charge go after scare tactics and hit programs that grab peoples heart strings and kick in the fear button.. when those elected can admit we have to much waste maybe something will get done.

or lets close the private airport outside of washington that is only used by those elected ones, and these clowns can't find waste.. way to funny. they should all be fired. or lets just tell those elected ones no more pay checks until you can find 1 billion in waste... my bet they return in 3 days cutting stupid programs.

Joanna, Let's see, we are going to eliminate money to allow soldiers to go to college, which was promised them, no money for homeless vets who fought for this country. Yet we give Egypt $250 million to make the Muslim Brotherhood love us, $60 million to Syria. We give money to illegal aliens and a governor who doesn't want to crack down on welfare abuse because it would look badly on his core constituents!!! Why for once isn't the Globe writers going to actually write the truth! The liberals in this country are clueless on how to run anything. Look at every major city in this country that is bankrupt, what party is leading it!!! This state spends almost $1 billion on benefits to illegals, yet we can't find money! REALLY Joanna!!!

Oh brother, another sob story as to why sequestration is a bad thing for american taxpayers. The list is too long for ANYONE to navigate as to what should be cut (or prioratize for that matter)in government waste and mismanagement. Get a clue will you libs.

cut all fed gov by 50%, now. enough of this nonsense...then lets see what we really need

Sounds like very kind of program best funded by private resources to begin with.

First, the program is getting nicked about $4000 dollars this year ($365,000/ 5 years x .05) . What's the address of the organization so citizens can help with privare support?

Second, Giermund, Upward Bound isn't an access program, it's a preparedness program. You're right; there are plenty of access programs. Upward Bound takes poor kids who are smart, but who have no clue (mostly because their parents don't have a clue) what going to college is all about, and what it can do for their lives, and helps make sure they are prepared for the pace and rigor of college. And it works.

Third, HarryRPitts, Railroad Salvage was in "Groton, East Windsor, West Haven CT and Turners Falls," but not Holyoke. "Plane crash in Ohio. Hundreds dead. Plenty of watches and rings."

Finally, Sequestration highlights "pulling at your heartstrings" programs because it cuts ALL discretionary programs, and that's where the "heart" of the government's programs are.

Thanks.  I don't care about Groton, East Windsor, West Haven CT and Turners Falls either.  "Plane crash in Ohio. Hundreds dead. Plenty of watches and rings" was excellent, I'm still laughing about it.  Discretionary federal programs are mostly BS.  The heart of government is defense and entitlements.  My mother needs that $1,800 kiss in the mail every month and she earned it from all the years that she and my Dad paid into the system while they were busy raising six kids plus taking care of my grandmother until she died.  Art therapy for illegal aliens living in Hampden County, eh, not so much.  It's on the list of 1,000 things I give a damn about but it's around 998.
