The latest attack on the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, is the claim that its long-term cost has suddenly spiked from around $1 trillion to $1.7 trillion. Because the new figure is plucked from a March Congressional Budget Office estimate, opponents of the law contend that the agency’s analysis shows it will be a budgetary disaster. But as with so many assertions about Obamacare, this one is misleading.

I'd stake my entire savings account on the fact this will go way over budget, just look at Medicare and Medicaid as an example.
"new tax revenues in the bill." This refers to the vile "Cadillac Tax" which was put off until 2018 well after the current administration leaves office. This tax is designed to wipe out employer provided insurance, and dump everyone into the individual market at the mercy of the insurance industry. The senate finance committee did a horrible job of implementing this bad idea (thanks John Kerry) so it will fall heavily on MA residents because of our cost of living. It is something that is rarely mentioned directly by ObamaCare advocates.
"Misleading"? If Globe readers switched to or added the Wall Street Journal to their morning intake they would get some facts instead of fiction. As an old Catholic priest once said to me, "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure". My comments are labeled rants by my more more educated, erudite critics who also post comments. High School did not prepare me for writing in other than "rant" style. Reading columns like this one remind me that it is a high probability that to this date no one has read all of the "Obamacare" law. Tidbits float around like this one. My emotions get the better of me when my better educated, smarter critics throw little puffs of smoke at me. My orthopedic surgeon who treats my shoulder arthitis (yes, I am old) told me that I need not fear that Obamacare would bar me from a shoulder replacement due to my advanced age. He is a Democrat and likes Obamacare because the same surgery he performs here would pay three times as much in NY city and that injustice would be corrected. In the same breath he said that it would be correct for a committee to bar an 85 year old women from heart surgery. This is how it is with "believers". Perhaps he missed one of those little financial tidbits regarding how Obamacare would be paid for. A 13.8% tax on earnings from 401k and Ira funds begins in 2014 after the election. Those little fines for not buying insurance accelerate to budget busters after the first three years and then the IRS comes after you with all the fear they garner if you don't pay up. If this little "rant" doesn't at least give some slight hesitation to believers, I have failed once again.
this is the biggest problem we face in america, uninformed people, they believe what they here on TV or read in a paper with an agenda. they will wake up when it hits their wallet............
It is very important with these critical issues to get beyond the often toxic "talking point". The details and facts are what count.
Wow! Wow! Let's be a little more truthful to the readers. . "In March of 2011, Obama's heath care czarina Kathleen Sebelius was forced to acknowledge under oath that the government double-counted $529 billion in "savings" associated with the implementation of the legislation. Numerous other errors and omissions have been uncovered within ObamaCare's fuzzy math — including a $52 billion raid of Social Security and a $72 billion repayment obligation for a new "long-term care trust fund." They lied, and the Liberal press will always put agenda first, before facts!
Notice how the numbers are based on collecting taxes for the first couple of yrs before Obamacare kicks in? What's going to happen year 11, 12, 13 and so on? I love paying for my Globe, however if you want real facts about how Obamacare will hit your pockets, start reading the WSJ. It is the number one newspaper in the country for a reason.
"The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a federal tax credit for low and moderate income families with dependent children under age 17. The purpose of the Child Tax Credit is to lower the tax burden of families who are raising children. The maximum CTC is $1000 per qualifying child." This is going to be cut in half to pay for Obamcare.
This is a truly stunning piece of political theater. The assumptions that went into this bill, just so the CBO could call it a money saver are numerous. But this editorial reminds us all why the Globe is no longer a serious place for news. It ignores how the first ten years include 10 years of revenue, but only 6 years of expenditures. It ignores the aforementioned boo-boo of counting twice the cuts from Medicare. The list goes on from here, and the oblivious Globe, just says ta-ta.
