Red Sox attendance: Selling out

Baseball is a game of statistics. But one line in the box score shouldn’t be taken too seriously: attendance. As the Globe reported on Friday, the Red Sox have been using some fuzzy math to support the team’s much-ballyhooed Fenway sellout streak, which has ostensibly been chugging along since 2003. The word sellout implies all tickets have been sold. But in fact, for many Sox games, paid attendance falls short of the park’s capacity.

at least ya got the SELLING OUT part right. cuz when these owners get into bed and business with entities like ACE TICKETS, that is exactly what they are doing in SELLING OUT their loyal fan base.ma

Ownership started things well here by focusing on fielding teams that could compete for championships. They won two, the first with a team with self-proclaimed "idiots". Theo didn't care for the "idiot" imaged and, with the signing of animitrons like JD Drew, constructed a team full of high priced stats guys without the makeup to play in this market. Stats and computers have a place in selecting players but shouldn't be the be all, end all. Of course that's hard to understand when the owner made his fortune by being gifted with numbers. If they want to have a real sell-out streak give us players, like the "idiots", who have a passion for the game and who fans can get behind. They've milked enough out of the two championships. It's time to get back to the basics of fielding a competitive, likeable team.

Go White Sox!..oops...eeerrr....wrong paper...
