Elizabeth Warren must be more than a liberal icon

Elizabeth Warren’s bid for US Senate made her a liberal icon. But in her victory speech, she showed a welcome recognition that she needs to be more than that. “The message you sent was clear,” Warren said to supporters of Republican Scott Brown, who touted his independence on key votes. “We need leaders in Washington who are willing to break the partisan gridlock and to work together regardless of party.” While that means setting a respectful tone, it should also mean finding policy areas where bipartisan agreement is possible. One place to start is on reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — the bailed-out behemoths that dominate the nation’s mortgage market. Warren’s expertise should prove helpful, and could bring along Democrats who’ve been leery of GOP criticisms of the firms. It’s a way to show voters of all parties that tough problems can and should be solved.

Has the Globe's editorial board been taken over by the shattered remains of the Republican Party in the North East? This and the "Obama should hire Mitt" editorial sound like what the chairman of the state GOP might say today.

Let the democrats solve the problems they created....Mitt Romney can go out an help create private sector jobs or do charitable work as he always has.   He owes them nothing, because as they claim it is all the GOP fault...and they would just need someone to blame and Mitt Romeny  would be it.

Elizbeth Warren ran with a populist message... and won with it. There are many more pressing issues for the Progressives than reformation of FNMA and FMAC, which is almost solely a GOP issue. I don't think the GOP gets it: everytime they say "bipartisan" they mean "do what I want or else". Pressing this issue above all else is just another round of it. The Democrats hold the whip hand in the Senate. They should use it.

Thats why there been  no budget in 3.5 years and Obamacare was rammed down the throats of this country...as Nancy Pelosi said we will find out what is in it after it passes.  So we have, more taxes, money deducted from medicare and death panels...so now thank Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi when all you get is a pill like Pres. Obama said and then die.

Warning: The Dems should NOT overplay their hand...that is what the Republicans have done over the last 12 years and it is what hurt the Democrats after Obama was elected the first time! Real reconciliation is needed...real compromise...real bipartisanship. Arrogance is arrogance regardless of party!
