A rat summit is scheduled to take place Tuesday at Castle Island in South Boston, where the rodent population appears to be exploding. With a bite force of 7,000 pounds per square inch, rats pose a threat to pipes and utility wires at the popular waterfront park. And there’s no time to waste before fighting an enemy that boasts a three-week gestation period and the ability to mate up to 20 times a day.
The state Department of Conservation and Recreation, which owns Castle Island, has wisely called in exterminator reinforcements from the City of Boston and the Massachusetts Port Authority. The agencies’ years of experience eradicating rats during the Big Dig should go a long way toward taking back the 22-acre property.

Isn't this really George Bush's fault?
They are mad about Whiteys treatment
I remember 40 years ago, my dad would taking us fishing at the end of Castle Island. We LOVED it, but sadly only caught a crab or two. But...the rats were big even back then. Some things never change.
The city should take all those feral cats the catch and deposit them on Castle Island. The rats will be gone in a year.
There used to be two or three cats on my street, but a while back I stopped seeing them around (I don't know if they died or the owners moved or whatever). At the same time I started seeing rats for the first time in the five years I've lived in my place. I saw one in broad daylight just walking down the street and going up and down the porch steps of each house like he was lost! Feral cats are not a good idea, but maybe the city could do some kind of cat adotion promotion as a part of the effort (probably wouldn't be enough to cure the whole problem). I don't want to sound silly, but why not? There'd be less need for poison and the cats would enjoy it.
