Mass. Democrats shouldn’t change laws on US Senate openings

Over the past eight years, Democrats who control the Massachusetts Legislature twice changed the rules for filling a US Senate vacancy to favor their party. Changing them a third time to avoid a special election would be an act of epic political arrogance. Unfortunately, Governor Patrick isn’t ruling it out.

The possibility that President Obama will tap Senator John Kerry for his Cabinet has become a source of anxiety for some Democrats. Because of the possibility that Republican Scott Brown might win a special election next year, there’s been talk of changing state law yet again — this time to let the governor appoint a replacement until the next regularly scheduled election.

Im sure that interim senator centerfold brown would prefer not running in the summer to losing in a landslide to a better more likeable candidate, such as the new rep from the 4th house district.

YEP! A Globe blogger once wrote that Massachusetts Democrats would elect a ham sandwich if it was called a 'Democratic - candidate.'

Sorry Boston Globe isn't not up to you - it's up to John Lynch (head of the Massachusetts democratic party)

Of course maybe if the Globe was a little less biased - we might have a couple more republicans ?

Maybe Governor Patrick can anoint Joe Kennedy, a few weeks as congressman elect is all the experience he needs.

As the globe said when they endorsed him - being a politician is in his DNA.

When you can demonstrate that the Boston Herald isn't biased, you can get back to us with more of your whining about the Globe editorial policies.

H11, are your partisan glasses that blinding?

But isn't "epic political arrogance" what the Democrat party in Massachusetts is all about?

Massachusetts Democrats do what they feel like doing, because the name of their game is, "Win at ALL COSTS." To see the Boston Globe make editorial objections is simply toooooo funny.

I agree, a little too late.

Tell you what.  When the Repub-lycans stop rigging elections with gerrymandering, then the Democrats might just pay attention to any complaints about messing with the rules.  When the bad guys stop fighting dirty, then so will the good guys. As long as they lie, cheat and steal, then give them a dose of their own medicine.

You make me laugh.  Lets see, in the past few years who was brought up on charges of gerrymandering? That wuold be our former Democratic Speaker of the House - Finneran.  these "bad guys"  your talking about don't have any power in this state.  I'm afraid you can blame your problems on the dems in this state.

Also, like your view of bad guys vs good guys - it's all perspective. But, I like that you admit the so called "good guys" (laughter inserted) Dems are playing dirty.  Well, its a start.

For all those rubes who just got into town, let me explain.  The labels “Democrat” and “Republican” don’t mean quite the same thing here in Massachusetts that they do elsewhere.  It’s not about Liberal or Conservative.  It’s about power.  The local Democrats are still the power base of that long-ago wave of immigrants who came here from countries starting with the letter “I”.  They managed to get political power by aligning themselves against the old WASP Brahmin Republican establishment and outnumbering them, and have hung on to that power since, joined by other minorities along the way. So all you folks who get your politics from Fox News and hate-talk radio, the talking points you’ve memorized and spout freely don’t apply.  Tip O’Neil reminded us that “all politics is local”; now you rubes need to figure out what that really means.

It appears that Lavrans works in the public sector.

Finally the Globe is taking note of some of the more flagrent, corrupt, activities of local Democrats. And, yes, it is corrupt to change laws merely to suit political whims. Should they change the law back again it will just mean Democrats have no ethical boundaries beyond "the ends justify the means". That Patrick, an alleged Democrat "leader", can't muster much more than ambivalence about yet another political scam on the populace by his party merely confirms the lack of ethics Democrats (all liberals) exude when it comes to managing power. They won't listen but points go to the Globe for having the (all too often missing) guts to point out the "inconvenient truth" of this crass ploy.

One slight problem with this article. Globe FORGOT to mention that it roundly advocated changing these rules. The Globe was all for putting in Paul Kirk "because Massachusetts needs Senate representation". That was the Globe's excuse. The REAL reason was that the Globe wanted to be sure there would be 60 Democratic Party Senators while ObamaCare was being debated.

The Globe's footprints are all over the Democratic Party's abuse of power. Also the Globe helped get Deval elected.
