letters | watchful eyes on iran agreement

US is not trusting — that’s the point

Editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez doesn’t get it. His Dec. 9 cartoon depicts Iran’s leader with a mushroom cloud over his head, and the message “Trust us.” We don’t enter into arms control agreements because we trust the other guy. We do so because we don’t trust the other guy.

That’s why, in this agreement with Iran, international inspectors will have daily access to nuclear facilities, and are already making these inspections. As for those who say Iran will use hidden facilities, that’s what intelligence assets are for.

The combination of agreed-upon inspections and national means of verification (satellites, communications intelligence, and other remote sensing means) worked with arms control agreements with the Soviet Union, and they will work with Iran.
